I was diagnosed with depression about 6 months ago. I changed medications and thought I was doing much better, but I have recently been feeling very down again. I went to my therapist today to talk about it. I am in college so I go through changes in my living situation and my lifestyle quite frequently. Anyway when I went to the therapist a couple of days ago I found that I just could not stop crying or getting upset. Any time he asks about anything that might be a problem or about something I may be feeling, I find my eyes tearing up and it's hard to speak. The same thing happens when my parents text or call me or ask me about things. I get so upset just thinking about how I feel and when someone asks or suggests it I can't even talk about it. It makes it hard to go through my day if my mom texts me and asks how I am feeling today and I suddenly feel much worse. My therapist was really concerned that I kept crying even towards the end of the session and after he had reassured me, and I couldn't explain why but I just kept getting upset. Does anyone know why this is so touchy for me, or do you have a similar problem? I know obviously it's upsetting to talk about something like depression especially when it's your own, but it seems like it's excessive for me.

I figure you've mentioned your change in mood to your therapist. At one time I would always start crying when I discussed something personal about my mental/emotional health. In my case I think it's part of my Borderline Personality.

Medications can lose their effectiveness. Talk to your therapist, you may need to change meds again.

Constant crying was the reason I first sought help with my depression. I cry easily anyway, but this was a daily occurrence I've found I do much better with a female therapist, but that's just me. I also found out though my family doctor that I had a severe electrolyte imbalance. My potassium was 2.0. an extremely low reading that could have been life threatening. I have constant diarrhea (tmi?) which caused the problem. but once it was under control and my potassium returned to normal, the crying stopped. Perhaps you need a medical checkup as well. I wish you the best of luck in resolving this.

The problem is that my crying isn't constant. It's only when I'm with my therapist or when someone reminds me of my problems. Anyway my therapist suggested increasing my medication dose. I just recently switched from an old one so I don't think losing its effectiveness is the problem. I just feel embarrassed when I get so upset.
Thanks for this!

Depression does that for you sometimes, I am surprised your therapist tried to find a reason beyond that. When I am depressed I easily cry over everything, doesn't even have to be serious problems. In hindsight I think the crying in therapy was good for me, at least someone tried to comfort me which is better than crying home alone.
