My bf had a bit of a breakdown this weekend, due to events involving his visits with his kids. He essentially admittedly that he would not be able to ever work again, and that this is pretty much as good as it gets for him. He apologizes to me, and says he's sorry he can't do or be more, but it just is. He thanked me for not leaving him, for standing by him, but... How do I help him cope with this? Could this just be the depression talking or do I need to accept the status quo??

It does sound like depression creeping in but I doubt you can truly predict whether or not someone 'will be able to ever work again'. I suppose you can take him for his word right now but keep an open mind ... things usually get better if we give them time and patience.

He's been depressed for about 5 months. He also admitted that he could not process the idea of ever getting married again (granted it's early, but he thought about it) and was even talking about how him not being here would make life easier for all...

I hope he finds some help ... sure sounds like he needs it. If he won't get help, you can. It might help you get clear on whether or not you want to continue to invest in this relationship if you want commitment and he does not.

Mainly the depression talking I suspect. Acceptance of the disease is a good thing and part of recovery. Seeing things as they really are. But little lulu is right. No one can predict the future. You can gently encourage him to get help. Is he being treated at all?

That's good. It's an insidious and debilitating disease. A year ago I was deeply suicidal and had lost all hope but for the last six months I have been doing great. So one never knows how things will unfold. Been that way my whole life. Maybe he needs to switch meds, take another approach in therapy, try other things, or maybe it just has to run its course. 5 months is a long time and if it were me I would change meds.

I've been advocating for him to look into adding in abilify or something of the sort, but he's not on board with that, as of yet.
