Wow. This all kind of came as a shock to me. My boyfriends uncle just died yesterday. He was such a sweet man. My boyfriend and I have been together for well over two years and our families are very close now. His family has always tried to include me in everything. However, this uncle of his, was always the nicest to me. He was always super funny and loved my relationship with my boyfriend. He was always so nice to me. I dont know what to do. It upsets me so much. In a way that I never thought was possible. I dont know if I should get flowers, or bake something, or go to the showing. My boyfriend currently is studying abroad. I just dont know what is appropriate for me to do in this situation.

![]() You speak of this uncle as if he were a beloved family member. What would you do in that case? You yourself are in mourning; what do you need to do for you at this time?

Do what you feel, if it comes from the heart then there is nothing wrong with it. Go ahead and bake or get flowers if that's how you wish to express your love for him and at the same time let the family know he was appreciated and loved. You have been part of the family.

It's so nice to hear of someone having that much affection for a relative of an s/o. I'm sorry you lost someone you thought so much of. Making an appearance during visiting hours would be entirely appropriate and likely much appreciated. That's giving of your time and attention. People in grief are comforted by the presence of others who can say I knew this person and he meant something to me. Flowers are actually less important and not strictly expected of you in your looser connection to this individual. A bit of home made food is a lovely gesture. In delivering it, you offer a bit of your presence.
I hope you expressed your sentiments in a way that felt right to you. They are just the kind of thoughts that bereaved persons need to hear. |
