If One recognizes an on-coming episode of depression, is it better to try to interrupt it with, say, distractions of some sort or to let the episode take its course?

I would try using coping skills which can include distractions to hopefully prevent or make the episode a little more manageable.

Welcome to PC.

I would say do whatever you can to prevent the episode if possible. Distractions may not do it depending on what they are. While you still have the energy and motivation I would suggest exercise. Walking outside. Doing anything social. The energy of others can make a big difference.

I have been dealing with it for years and often nothing works in preventing it or getting out of it and I have learned to let it run its course. Its not because that is my strategy it is just what is.

Thanks. No offense but it sounds like you are trying to answer, "Do both," which seems logically impossible.

I am not saying do both. I am saying do everything possible to prevent it. It is usually much easier to prevent that to come out of once in it. If you are deep in it do whatever you can to come out of it.

If you find that no matter what you do you still fall into it and then no matter what you do it remains then you may not have a choice but to ride it out. After many years of many depressive episodes I have found that to be true for me. Doesn't mean it is true for you. Often when it is moderate things I do make a difference and will snap me out of it. Even in the deepest of depressions when I kind of know it has to run its course I will still make appointments with my psychiatrist and therapist and keep attempting to do what I can even with no hope it will make any difference. Its kind of a paradox of acceptance yet willingness.
