I'm just curious to know how many people actually believe when they're told or have told someone that "things will get better". I really don't mean to sound so pessimistic... maybe it's just because I'm in such a 'bitter' mood, but as I've mentioned before I've been battling severe depression since I was about 11 or 12 and well I just turned 23 last week. Being miserable and down is all I know.... I can't imagine a life without these feelings. I used to be the person who said 'things will eventually get better', but now I feel like I'm kidding myself.

I've spent the last 12 years filling my head with false hope... I can't bear to think that the next 10 years or so will be the same. I still use the phrase (things will get better) to my mom all the time and it seems to give her that extra oomph she needs to get through the day, but when I said this to her tonight she said, 'thanks' but her facial expression was unmoved... it's as if she finally believed that they're just words... it really broke my heart... a little more...

I hope things get better ... otherwise life is pretty darn crummy Curious to know what everyone thinks (will things really get better?)

People need something to believe in, and I honestly believe that when you're at the bottom of a pit, the only way out is getting out in a better mood.

But I dunno.

Anony, when I'm depressed, I don't believe it when people tell me I'll feel better. I sometimes try to tell myself that I will feel better, but I don't believe myself either. That's the nature of depression... that hopelessness.

My depressive periods have always ended, though, and I always do feel better eventually. At one point I felt better for about 14 years, so that gives me hope.

P.S. I had depression when I was a kid, a teenager and when I was in my very early 20s. It got better when I was about 22 though... and I didn't get depressed again until last year (when I was 36). I have only had two periods of depression in my 30s (both last year) and they were relatively short compared to what I went through when I was younger. So, for me, things did get better. I hope the same happens for you.

I'd like to think that things eventually get better in life. I've always been a big believer in everything happens for a reason, so even when I'm really down, I try to look at my crummy life and see if there's anything I can improve. That way I can say that those crummy weeks, months, or years were worth something in the long run.

I hope you feel better soon Anony. I'm sending you positive thoughts.

Thanks everyone for your words and for responding so quickly. Like I mentioned I used to think positively. I think just the idea of being another year older, seeing another year pass by with no change, just hit me a little hard. Maybe once I bounce back from bitterness I'll feel hopeful again, who knows?
