To the point: does music ever depress the hell out of you?
I'm a music lover. I'm a musician. Music is infinitely more than a pastime or amusement for me; much more than background noise. So, am I the only one that is so moved by music that it hurts to listen to at times? The only one that tangibly feels terrible - even from favorite upbeat, or beautiful music? I know that I am not, so please share what is is like for you. What does it feel like when music make you feel bad? Do you feel betrayed? Do you feel abandoned? |

There have been times that I came across the song that literally synced to my depressive states and actually made things a bit worse for me. As a whole thouhg, music tends to keep me balanced when my mood swings and I usually just avoid songs that I know are triggers when I am in depression.

For me it depends on the song. Some songs and even bands for me have a lot of good and bad memories attached that usually make me feel really sad either way because it makes me remember the past.

Quote:
i can certainly relate to that. their are songs and bands, that when i hear them remind me of people who have passed away, funerals, etc etc. but music is also what gets me through. if my life didn't have music in it, i'm not sure where i'd be |

sometimes when a song comes on that talks about something nice that i've never had the experience of, i will cry.
because the song in question makes me feel i'm missing out |

Yes, I've had this for over 10 months now and it is killing me. I can't listen to music, it just makes me sad. Not in a bittersweet, "sad song" kind of way that actually feels good sometimes. But sad and severely depressed like "i need to turn this off or i'm going to jump out the window"
Like you, music has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember. I've played in bands, dj'ed on the air and live events, worked for record labels and record stores...etc. Before I suddenly became depressed 10 months ago, music was on all the time - every waking moment. It filled my life with meaning and pleasure. There was always a song on my lips and in my heart. Now it just hurts. Yes I do feel betrayed and abandoned. It is killing me. |

Yes, I often find music depressing or sad too. Sometimes the sadness is cathartic, but not always.
The longer I have dealt with depression and anxiety, the bigger problem I've developed reacting negatively to music. I don't even always like to listen to it anymore. I feel like I don't know what it's going to do to my emotions. It sort of jerks them around. It doesn't have to have any words, either. Often it's the quality of the sound that does it. |

Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'...the lyrics hit way too close to home and make me feel for former friends and family who don't understand why I'm gone.
