I see it as more than just showing up in the office for a session, it's the energy outside of session into trying to work through whatever it is I'm personally working through.
Does cynicism need changing? Perhaps not. Is it necessary to trust every person you meet? Perhaps not. One thing that's in a cbt workbook for clients that I have, myself being the client not therapist, is a goals sheet. I'd suppose if struggling to reach goals and there's some cognitive roadblocks, then it could help? Really hard to say, to be honest. |

Therapy can work. Having trust issues and feeling vigilant describe a lot of folks in therapy! I have found that therapy with the right therapist is powerfully healing.
For me, that meant taking a few years to be able to trust this person and the therapist being patient enough to wait for my trust. Her doing that, being steadfast in her commitment to work with me, actually increased my feeling safe in the world. If we never got to the underlying issues, I'd still consider the therapy effective for that reason. The relationship itself can be quite healing.

The nice thing about therapy is there is no risk involved. You can just try it and see if it works for you. Quite a lot of people get a benefit from it. Mistrust and viewing life as hostile is one of those self-reinforcing things. If you don't trust people, they *will* be hostile towards you, proving that you were right not to trust them. Life is both hostile and welcoming towards you at the same time. When you're depressed it's easy to only see the hostile part. Therapy works, but in my opinion, only if you feel connected to the therapist. If you go in there and aren't connected at all it will feel weird and generally won't help you. Best of luck!
