How do you eat enough? I don't - I eat until I'm full, which is in a day usually one slice of bread (special bread that's very filling) (I skip this (or at least part of it) when I get the chance), two pieces of fruit, and a bit of vegetables. Sometimes meat. I try to drink lemonade instead of water, so I get some sugar into myself that way.
I try to eat more often - I eat two pieces of fruit for lunch, but as I can't manage two pieces AT lunch, I eat one during midmorning and one during lunch. I'm losing weight fast without even trying. Part of this is because I'm tapering off Zyprexa (which is notorious for its weight gain and I did gain a lot on it) but most is because I eat little I think. So far (It's 13:16 here) I've eaten a (small) bowl of yoghurt for breakfast and an orange for lunch. I have to eat a slice of bread within the next 43 minutes or my mum'll get mad, and I'm already apprehensive - how the heck will I manage that? I'm full! How do you guys manage to eat enough? |

I am really curious how your body gets full off that little amount. One way to eat enough is to slowly increase what you eat to eventually eat an actual portion. If I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full, most days it's not a lot either but it's two meals. More than you eat but not always as much as most people. I like to follow the portion sizes which are always available.

Sounds like the bread is bloating you or something. You're not taking in ANY protein, by the way. You need it.

Yes, I would cut the bread out of your diet. It's making you bloated and feel full. Bread isn't very good for you anyway.

When I am deeply depressed I have no appetite. Food is absolutely revolting to me. But if I don't eat at all I feel sick. Smooth foods...ice cream, Gatorade, yogurt, yes - bread...can at least get something into my body.
Is there a connection, breadfish, between your depression and your lack of appetite? |

I think the depression is the reason behind my lack of appetite, yes.
One problem is that I can't eat what my mum (I live with my parents) thinks is "weird" or "not necessary". She thinks I just should suck it up and eat normally. |

If you can't eat, you can't 'just eat'. An ssri could be very helpful for you. Are you on any meds?

I'm presently tapering off imipramine (a TCA) and I'm on two AAP's that are both used as an adjunct. None of them work, which is why I'm tapering off. I've been on just about every class of AD's and none of them have worked.
I've done ECT, that did have some effect on my appetite. As in, I'd totally quit eating and after a few ECT sessions I started eating minimally again. Today I was actually hungry and I thought the food (I'd even cooked, together with my mum) smelled good. Loaded my plate full. I couldn't even eat half. ![]() |

I know that you are drinking lemonade for the sugar, but I would stop having it as the gas will bloat you. Have a sugary drink by all means but not a fizzy drink. A food supplement milkshake might be helpful.
My meds and depression make me lose my appetite, is your depression worsening now you are tapering off meds? Mirtazepine is a useful anti-depressant for stimulating the appetite, my docs were really keen for me to give it a go when I wasn't eating but I couldn't take it for a different reason. |

When I've had trouble eating it helped to eat a little bit of something palatable before I was actually feeling very hungry. By the time the hunger was intense, the thought of food was repulsive.
