Sometimes few things about a particular topic or in general just skip my mind. For instance, my boyfriend asked me if I had spoken to my ex-boyfriend in a while and i said, about 2 years ago when in fact I had spoken to him many times during the last 2 years, as recently as a month ago. Now of course everyone thinks i was lying but the truth is I did not remember at all that I had spoken to my ex. I did not remember any conversation I had. But it was all there in my facebook messenger that i had spoken to him! I don't know why I didn't remember. EVen the conversations I didn't remember. They just hit me when I read them in my messenger! Now, I've had this problem since I was small. I can remember some things with vivid details while some just completely skip my mind. I also have genetic depression. I had read that depression causes selective memory. Do you think it could be that?

I find that when my depression is worse, so is my memory. I have to check my diary and write a list to plan each day or I forget everything. If it's a lifelong issue too, you may be able to find tips on how to work around and compensate for memory problems. One of my tricks is to say I don't know if I'm likely to have forgotten something or misremember. Now I'm older, I blame my age but I tell people I forgot things. I have a standing joke I say that I have a memory that would make a goldfish blush! For me it's short term memory that's hardest, longer ago I remember better. Be kind to yourself ![]() |

Kind of sounds like you have something else other than "just" depression going on, creatingself. It's true that when we experience deeper depression or periods of major stress that our brains just aren't functioning very well and our memory gets foggy. But, what you are describing seems different. Have you ever discussed it with a medical doctor or mental health professional?

Maybe your mind is making a difference between actually speaking to someone, like out loud and in person, and just using social media to communicate by screen.

Whilst my cycles of depression "peak & trough" one of the probs caused by my brain injury is I have no short term memory. To combat this I make loads of notes throughout a working day. If I ever lost my diaries/organisers ....!!
