I've been having trouble lately, with motivating myself to shower. I don't really have a problem with body odor, but my hair gets greasey after awhile. How can I motivate myself to shower?

Oh my goodness that is the worst symptom I have when depressed. I can go two weeks with no shower or longer. Finally my beard, long greasy hair gets to me and I have to. Or if I have to go out to an appointment or something I will be to embarrassed to go without showering. If it is just going to the store or something I will just put on a hat.

I really don't know how to motivate myself. I notice that when I just jump in the shower without thinking about it the depression is just about over.

I don't think I can motivate myself. I just absolutely have to force myself. I do feel better after but forcing it doesn't cure the depression for me just makes me feel a little better about myself for taking care of myself.

Depression makes it hard to do daily tasks and take care of ourselves. I have to just force myself to have a bath and I feel much better afterwards .

I have to make myself do things too. It doesn't cure the depression, but you feel worse and can get problems from neglecting yourself.
Caring for yourself, like cleaning teeth, showering of feeding yourself can make you feel a fraction better too, even if only briefly.

Sending the best of luck and stubbornness against the depression to you.

Maybe you can try candles and a bath with salts. Really pamper yourself.

im dealing with the same thing. brushing my teeth is a real chore right now, i force myself to do everyday though. but when you are struggling with the smallest things its so difficult. i always feel so much better afterwards, im just waiting to be able to snap out of it all.

One possible option is something called "Snap Club". The link below will take you to a Thread posted by PsychCentral member: "Vital" with regard to this technique.

Totally agreed! Well, I'm in my second day today, and maybe heading to a third. Don't know how far it will go. But I do know that I have to take shower on saturday because I need to go somewhere.

I showered yesterday.. it had been a week.

I used to, if I was too tired to shower, shower in the bath. Takes less energy.

What motivation teckniques have you used before? Can you make them active again?

One way of doing it is to hang up small paper tags on the doors. When you hang them up in the evening, you are preparing yourself for the next morning. When the morning comes you see the reminders and perhaps get motivated. If that doesn't help, may be it is an idea to go to bed again and put a timer on for 10 minutes. While waiting for the alarm, you might fill your head with motivating thoughts and then jump out of bed when the time is used and into the bathroom.

Hope this helps! If not, may be somebody have ideas that suits you better. Remember that it takes time to come out of depression. Please be kind to yourself if you you don't manage at first.
