This week in Depression Support Chat we are jumping off from an article that discusses depression in depth. In-Depth: Living with Depression | Psych Central

We probably won't get to all of the article this week but it is a great in depth overview that makes for a good read.

Come on out to Depression Support Chat Thursday 9PM EDT and you can listen and or share. Hope to see you there.

Good article - though I think it "should have" contained a few lines about ECT.

I won't be present for the chat, as it's in the middle of the night for me.
Thanks for this!

Sorry you will not be there Breadfish. I agree that in med resistant depression ECT can be the primary choice. Maybe that is outside the author's beliefs about viable treatment. It also is something that is a medical procedure that should only be prescribed by a qualified doctor so maybe people do not need to know about it unless they have few other choices. It would be nice to see it to demystify it and destigmatize it after the hollywood images that are inaccurate.

Thank you

My Pdoc uses ECT with very severe ACUTE depression, but he explained to me that the evidence is that the effects tend not to last with dysthymia or very chronic depression

That meant he believed the risks outweighed the potential benefits for me and people like me.

I was ready to try it, having tried just about everything else. :disappointed:

He also said that it is very effective in ACUTE depression, especially the first episode.

Food for thought?

Fizzy, Sorry to hear this. In my observations of others being treated the risks are of possible memory losses. That might be a big loss for you considering the nature of some of your hobbies. PM me if more detailed discussion wanted.

It is not a cure all but it can get people back from the brink of depression. In bipolar it can lead to mood swings after depression is beaten back.

Thank you !!
