I don't think there's any shame in treating yourself.
Thanks for this!

what I have an issue with is not getting presents from anyone else

I think it sucks and it's ashame- 1 of the few times of the year you are meant to be with family and friends and I don't have that

Is it really the lack of presents from others that's bothering you, or not having people to spend the holiday with?

Yes,it does suck.I have been in your shoes many times, alone on many holidays,no gifts from anyone, etc.

I know it's hard, but think about the positives...if you buy your own gifts,at least they will be things you really want and not things you don't want or need.

You can spend the day doing anything you want, with no other committments to worry about. You can stay in your pj's all day and eat and do whatever you please, whether it's lying on the couch watching Netflix all day or drawing, reading,or whatever it is you enjoy.

I used to get really down and depressed about it,about not having anyone, not having gifts, etc. but then I decided to just think of it as 'my' day, found things to do I enjoy, made the best of it.It works much better than feeling sorry for myself.

Christmas is ONE day of a year. ONE DAY of 356. No idea why everybody makes such fuss about it.

If you buy yourself your own present you will save yourself from getting clutter in reindeer wrapping.

Before I got married Christmas was a huge event. Big parties at my house. Full calendar with dates ,concerts, church events. Big parties at Country Club. Dancing. Tons of gifts.
The first year we were married I did my usual and brought him. He didn't like the excitement and all the shopping and cleaning and food prep. He didn't like all the guests that forgot to use coasters on the coffee table ect.
Then he resented the work of reorganizing the house and putting the decorations away.
I tried two more times. A big bash with a full house of sleepover guests at our Lake Nacimiento home. Tree. All decorations.
He didn't really enjoy it.
The. I tryed entertaining here in Costa Rica. Just some family. No decorations. Wasn't much fun for me.
The last 17 years I've been alone on Christmas. No food. No gifts. No fun. Just another day.
Same plans this year. None.

both, I think
iit goes together- because I don't have anyone to spend the holidays with, I don't have anyone who will buy presents for me

it's like i'm saying to myself.. well, merry christmas- here's some stuff you ordered yourself

seems pointless

Yes. Let's just all be thankful.
A roof over your head. Food in the fridge. Fresh air. Clean sheets and towels.
Good stories on NPR.

I saw on Ripley's Believe It or Not, a man who sends himself a little wrapped present every day. Even if it was just a stick of gum. He liked getting the packages even though he probably remembered what was in them.

Yes I have a strange perspective on things , however buying your own Christmas gifts has numerous pluses it always fits , it's exactly what you wanted, it's never the wrong color and it's not a useless gift card for something you can't use , for example my aide has four children and is a single parent , his ex wifes parents are very wealthy last year the grandparents sent each kid a $200 gift card for iTunes, they don't have mp3 players and share two Android phones that they share , would it have been so hard for the grandparents to have maybe given them an iPod shuffle and a smaller gift card , instead they have $800 dollars in gift cards sitting in a drawer because they have nothing to use them on , they say it's the thought that counts , well really finishing the thought would have been alot better.

So buying our own presents avoids all that hassle , take a little time to be thankfull for what we have OURSELVES!

What skewed my perspective to so much positive, if today wasn't the best day of your life , try missing one ! I missed more than one being in a coma , it does freaky things to a person to think your waking up from having gone to bed , only to be told in the easiest gentlest way possible your not waking up, a lot has changed in the world and your life and alot of things happened to you since going to bed , you get over the shock of finding out you went to bed a couple of months ago , but working through the emotional stuff changes you as a person .

And poof here I am skewed perspective and All! I'll buy my own gifts happily , you never need a toaster oven and get socks or vice versa , be good to yourselves be your own best friend and advocate even if no one seems to be stepping up to the Plate!

That's easy to deal with , invite them all over for Christmas, get the whole gang together ,have drinks and coffee and all the family small talk (that you could probably do without anyway) and don't have a think to eat in the house except a pail of Wise foods dehydrated emergency food, I can tell you the lasagna ain't bad , then next year feed them if they come again and nobody will dare complaint, salt ,no salt they won't care they will just gratefull.and then in years to come maybe the dialog will change to something more valuable like instead of all the petty *****ing that people do maybe showing genuine concern for each other and the sense of community and that each one of you made it through the trials and tribulations of life, to sit around and catch up about what brought you all together and what it took to get you all here safe and together again , that's what's lacking in most holiday get together s but I think I'm too hopefull that humans will become a nicer more caring bunch .think globally act locally and be proactive not Reactive! Just as a side note I prefer a sugar cured ham rather than salt of the tears from the host who realizes the people for dinner are just that here for dinner. Badump bump I'll be here all week folks, so come back again .
Thanks for this!

No problem, it's the TV show that I meant. Although I remember it was something else before TV/movies. I don't remember what it was, but I do remember it from something.
