I have started a CBT program and was wondering if anyone else has tried it and how it worked for them. Thank you.

I say it works differentlt for different people, I didn't have much luck with it but then I need deep psychological therapy cos my problems stem from my past, I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you and your family are reunited soon

Well from what I can see so far it is helping me think about my problems and giving me different ways of approaching them. I was told that if you have had serious problems in your past or have OCD the program needs to be more intensive.

Then in that case, go for it! I found it to be a tempory solution to a deeper problem.

Hi dragonphoto, I found CBT to be like putting a band aid on a wound, but not really fixing the cause of the depression deep within. I did get some relief from the worst symptoms. Things that really helped me from CBT were learning to get more sleep and making that a number one priority. And shoring up my external resources of support, like friends and family. Doing these two things helped me limp along better and regain some function.

I then reached a wall with the CBT therapist. Our work was too superficial to really solve the depression. When I started with a therapist who was willing to go deep and get at the root causes of my depression, I really made progress. He gave me hope, and that helped so much. We also did EMDR to heal some stuck trauma from the past.

Good luck with CBT. It can often help with some of the symptoms. My CBT therapist was quite confident she could solve my depression in 6 months, so this indicates to me she has had good success with this method with many people.

Well the depression and anger that I feel are more of a chemical imbalance than something that happened to me in the past. It has taken me close to a month to realize this. I really hope that the CBT works for me.

My husband is on anti-depressants and they have really helped him with his anger too. (I wish he would do therapy, but the meds seem to provide what he wants right now.) Life events can lead to chemical imbalances and so to depression. So it is not just a case of depression is caused either by events or chemicals. Stressful and traumatic events lead to changes in our brain chemistry, levels of neurotransmitters, etc. That is why psychotherapy can help with depression, as it gives you ways to modify your biochemistry. When I solve my problems with life events, my biochemistry "improves", and depression is alleviated. Good luck with the CBT. Hope you will report in and let us know what specific things work for you!

I have been doing very well with my therapy. I am still working on things and I have come to some conclusions. The ABC form works well as well as the passing train.

I've found CBT very helpful in stopping drinking as well as in dealing with my depression - but then I also use meds and other therapies as well.

Good luck adn hope it works out for you.

cbt was not enough to help me..... doesn't work for my depression. it runs deeper than what cbt does. mine is clinically occurring. happening for no reason.

CBT is wonderful imo. It isn't a get well quick therapy (not brief therapy) though you can take the basics and begin feeling better by countering the negative thinking, rather soon.

What happens with CBT, imo, is that over the course of time you change the habits you have fallen into. The negative thinking, the irrational thinking, the perspective of life and world that has become distorted, all those are adjusted by learning and practicing CBT.

Sometimes bad habits began because of how others treated you, what others have told you over and over ( that being negative and perhaps abusive) and are not easily recognizable except by a Therapist.

Things you do, the way you "are" often are because of unconscious training. This behavior might not be in your best interest. Working with CBT you find those areas of your life that are mine-traps and correct them.

CBT is definitely work! It takes looking at yourself and seeing plenty of negative issues, and working through those to realize it isn't you... it's what that type of thinking has done to you.

TC!

There have been lots of randomised control trials on CBTs efficacy in depression and it has good success rates - but like anything it isn't 100% and it won't help everyone. but if it's useful for you - go for it,
The best outcomes in the trials come from a combinatioin of medication and CBT

i remember someone saying cbt is for the 'worried well 'i tend to agree , it seems 'fashionable' and gives false hope to lots of people, i do think it is good at challenging the way we think, and the 'here and now 'but some folk need more indepth therapy which i don't feel cbt does .when it fails to work a client can feel even more of a failure.
