I've been told I have a problem with my Serotonin levels. It has not been explained to me how a Psychiatrist can know that without any kind of blood work or tests.
Should I go to a Neurologist to see why I have all of these problems with my brain chemistry? What doctor tests stuff like that? My diagnosis' are: -Attention Deficit Disorder -Post traumatic stress Disorder -Major Depressive Disorder -Severe Anxiety/Panic Disorder Please help....what caused all of this....not even my psychologist had the answer..except for the PTSD of course. PLEASE HELP I'M SCARED.

I'm not sure if anyone here knows what causes their own issues, much less yours, but don't fret! Psychology and Psychiatry are different things, and it might be worthwhile for you to see a Psychiatrist. While there is clearly a chemical element to depression, as well as the other problems you mention, there's also a mental one as well, so blood tests won't necessarily reflect that. Having a Psychiatric evaluation will try to get to that. Neurology isn't really what you're after. It mostly deals with how the brain works, not why the brain is doing what it is doing.
My advice is to get to a psychiatrist as soon as you can, and good luck! Keep us posted.

IslandMedic, I also struggle with the same issues. I have a good psychiatrist that has been able to figure out a medication combination that works well for me. It is true, we will probably never know for absolute certainty what causes our mental health illnesses but they can be treated.

As far as I know, there's no way to test for brain hormone levels. Psychiatrists are able to tell by talking to you what might be going on in your brain.
By the way, congratulations on taking the first step. Best wishes. |

Thank you all for your replies. I do have a Psychiatrist and she has come up with a great combination of medications for my multiple problems. I'm feeling well. I also suffer from anxiety/panic attacks and Attention Deficit Disorder. I'm taking a "new" anti-depressent called Pexeva. It's just like the old Paxil. I was on Paxil for about 5 years before they discontinued it from the manufacturer.
I also see a psychologist/psychotherapist....she helps me talk things out while my psychiatrist keeps my chemicals balanced. I did start a new ADD medication today so hopefully all will remain well and move in a positive direction. thanks, Kristen

Low serotonin levels is a fairly common reason why some people are depressed (or another neurotransmitter in the brain called norepinephrine can be low as well). I'm glad you've got a good support network, and hope the ADD meds work for you. ![]()
