Generics come into being after the patent for the "brand name" med has expired. They are FDA-required to contain the same medication, etc as the brand name. They are also significantly cheaper than brand names, but they work just the same. If you have insurance, you'll probably find that your med copay is half as much for a generic as it is for a brand name, and in fact, sometimes the generic is SO cheap that it doesn't even cost as much as your copay.

I vote for sticking with generics wherever possible.

Maybe you could look up opinions on the internet? Use Google or some other search engine...

When I first went on Synthroid (for my thyroid), I could not get a generic form. Although Synthroid is not nearly as expensive as anti-d's, it was nice to only have to pay for the Levoxyl (generic form) price. At the time I did a little research, and talked to my pharysist, and he told me that they were exactly the same thing.
The ingredients were exactly the same thing, and the same amounts and everything.
It is kind of like buying a store brand instead of the name brands when you shop for food. Tastes the same, looks somewhat similar (maybe a diff look), but saves on the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

In the USA generics, by law, MUST contain the exact same ACTIVE ingredients as the Brand. What is different is the "fillers" and coatings and such.

I have never noticed a difference between a generic and the other meds. I actually even ask for the generic because it is cheaper. There really is no difference...it is just that a different company puts out the generic then the original. I would not worry too much about the effectiveness diminshing.

generic is just the same drug without the fancy brand name jacking the price up. exact same chemical though. my mate uses generic prozac (fluoxetine [?-sp]) and it works just fine for him.

My post stated the difference -for the USA- because for those of us who are allergic, there IS a difference. But it is correct that the MAIN CHEMICAL, ingredient must be the exact same compound and strength.
