I'm 22 and been depressed for 3 years i was seeing a psychologist and also a psychiartrist but things don't seem to be getting any better. All i do is sleep and when i wake up i just want to be on my own. My dad tries to get me to do things with him so i'm out and about but i just push him away but i can't help it. When will things start to improve? It's not fair on him.

I found that when I am depressed the last thing I want to do is get out of the house. Thankfully I have friends and family that push me to get out, although for the past week I've been really down to the point of illness and haven't found a good enough reason to leave.
I understand how you feel. I started a stupid fight with my boyfriend because I felt angry, and now I just feel numb. I think the best thing to do is to tell your dad how you feel, and that you're down and don't mean to push him away. I think he's trying to help, but maybe that isn't what you need is his help. Depression can be really hard to understand for someone who doesn't have it, and even for those who do. Sometimes I don't understand why I feel the way I do - I just do. Let your dad know that you love him, but you are just going through a tough time. You don't mean to push him away; you just don't know how to feel anything right now, and even though he is trying to help that there is no quick fix for your feelings. I bet he's just trying to make his little girl smile again, and it frustrates you because you feel he doesn't get it - and he probably doesn't. But don't get angry. Just let him know you love him and appreciate his efforts and ask for him to patient. You'll get better. Are you on medication of any kind? It might help with your feelings...

Hi teary_me. I understand what you're feeling.. it's really frustrating to want to get out of your depression but just CAN'T. It's great that you're seeing both a psychologist and psychiatrist. Their help will probably be the best help you can get right now. But, don't be afraid to switch to another psychologist or psychiatrist if you feel you're not getting anywhere with one or the other.
As for your dad, I agree with Mellie (Sad_In_TX). Explain to him how your feeling and that you don't mean to push him away but you just can't help it. Keep going out and doing things with your dad even when you don't feel up to it. In the long run, it will help you out. Also, what about your friends? Can you make plans to hang out with them more often? Sometimes it's easier to have fun with and talk to your friends than your parents. |

My dad is big in my life, too. Daddy's girl all the way! I've been diagnosed bipolar but depression is my biggest issue. It was recommended by my doc for my dad to read the Manic Depression Workbook in order to gain some insight into what it is that I go through. My dad read it and he says it really helped him understand me in a whole new way. The things he's seen me do over the years, etc. Maybe it would help your dad too? Just a thought/suggestion.
