about going back to school------always wanted to have my degree before 50--well, that goal got pushed back from 30, 40, 45.....and now i'm past the 50 goal.
H and i talked at length, insiders talked at length, and we decided to go for it! so, now the goal is pushed back again to 60!!!!
now the quest begins for looking for the "right" school.
I'm an adult with experiences that would fit into 2 or 3 lifetimes--well, i guess the do sorta--not an 18 yr old high school student and i want to find someplace that will respect that.
thnking of counselling psychology-----and my T teaches at one of the best colleges around this area for that degree--unfortunately, she teaches the core courses and the practicum....
so now i search for grants, schools and ideas where to go.

Any ideas on women's grants will be accepted!!!

BESTEST wishes! Some schools have adult degree programs that give college credit for life and work experience. More and more "older" adults go to college these days so i wouldn't worry too much about fitting in.
Thanks for this!

Talked to T about my plan. She was really excited for me. Said that the school she teaches at has an Adult Completion Program designed especially for adults who took classes long time ago and want to get degree.
So I am gathering what info I have and will send for transcripts and find any adult continuing ed (non-credit) class certificates, document all that I have done in the last few years and hope I can get credit for some of it.
Then find out what I have to do next to enroll in the fall.

Exciting and scary----negative tapes start to play and I am running around turning them off and fighting getting road blocked.

Why does such and exciting and positive thing have to have all this crap attached???????

Just need encouragment and positive reassurance that I will/am able to do this.

WI,

I’m very excited for you and congratulate you for having the courage to move forward with a goal that you have wanted to achieve for a long time. It is natural to be apprehensive, but as long as you recognize it as such, you will be able to overcome these expected fears.

I commend you for researching prospective educational opportunities and initiating steps towards enrollment. It speaks to your desire and commitment.

I believe that you will be successful and I offer you encouragement and support.

Take care of you!

Regards,

RR

Support is so appreciated
I know the work will be hard as the Adult Completion Program (ACP) is fast paced.
It will take self motivation and discipline which we lack. Another "message" to work thru, another roadblock that we have to realize is more like a couple of saw horses not a stone wall.

Trying to break these fears down into manageable pieces.

A friend threw some shards of glass on my path and I am trying to sweep them up too......not very supportive, more like i need to reconsider and not go there. Turned on the "message" of doubting myself and all the negative not good enough, smart enough, not emotionally stable enough, or physically healthy enough.......because it didn't work for her and she is so negative about her experience in the ACP. Have to keep saying to myself that I am not her. That I have the support she didn't have. I love to learn new things. I have a goal and this is NOW MY CHANCE to go for it.

H is very supportive of this. Financially it will be a burden, but he said not to even look at that. We will find ways to do this.

Sorry for the rambling.

Thank you all for being supportive.
I will be taking full advantage of this support come August, if I get into the program--and if not, I will still take classes so I can get into the program later. Not letting this opportunity slip by again!!!!!!

Congratulations White_iris for going back to school,

I loved going back to college. I found out alot about myself(s) and I was glad that I had waited to go back. It felt good and gave me purpose, hopefully college will be the same for you ! .
You Can Do it White_iris!! Go...! Go...! Go...!!!
OH!... Hey!
by the Way ...in the college student services place sometimes near the registation offices or finacial aid office there are books and books of grants you can apply for but keep in mind these grants and scholorships are usually due the year before you go usually in March, April or May but each Grant is different.
Hey White_iris sometimes the Rehabilitation Department in your state can help pay for full time student. If your not familar with the Rehab Depart. in your state, ppl would be suprised to know what they cover.
What ever happens GOOD LUCK! The smilley is ing for you! arty: for White_Iris!!!ThaCrew

Thank you so much for your support and your thoughts on grants and such. I realize now that they due way in advance. Forgot what the process was since it's been awhile since the boys did all that research----geee!!! We have always taught the sons that education is life long and to never ever give up learning.
Youngest (29) is getting his PhD next year and he will stay in acedaemia forever--wants to teach college level physics!!!!!
Oldest son has BA in Social Science and MDiv. Reads alot. Takes classes whenever he can.
H has MS and MDiv.
Both are supportive of their mom going back. H is supportive.

FEAR ALERT: what if i let everyone down?????

AGGGGGGGGG Another roadblock to break down...... might get good at this and go into barrier break down work

WHAT IF you let everyone down? fill in the blanks and see what you are afraid will happen if you don't do as well as you wish.

WHAT IF you do this just for you? then it will not be about them at all.

WHAT IF you discover this is exactly what you have been wanting to do? the what if's can be positives as well as negatives.

WHAT IF this enriches your life and adds amazing new experiences to your life and you just love it???

it will help if you hold in your mind the truth that you have the right to try whatever you want and that we often learn more from our failures than our successes....HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that you WILL always fail.

No matter what you decide about this school, YOU ARE STILL OK!!!

All the support is so wonderful!!!! Thanks Pixies---You are right--WHAT IF I find that it is what I want more than anyone else wants.....Or that I find that that it helps me feel good to have finally reached a goal in my life.....

Today was busy. Got my college transcripts....I didn't realize all the things I had done!!! and that is just some of the credits I had accumulated over the yrs and lots of continuing ed non credit classes and I have yet to find the certificates for other things I have done.....I really shouldn't say I--It is WE who have done all this stuff over the last many yrs----

It's one thing to think it but another to see on paper what classes and seminars and other things.

I baffled the counselor at the college. She actually said she didn't know how to process all the things we have accomplished. I will make an appt when I get a portfolio together.......
I am not a usual case LOL. But then again , Have I ever been?????

I will keep you all up to date on progress in this quest. It is exciting and a bit scary.

to everyone

White_Iris,

We think there are a few of us here in this forum that you will spur on to the next educational link in our lives. We went back at age 54 and have used many of the skills we learned, but not all yet.

Wouldn't it be something if you and a few others of us could do this together, different focuses, mind you.

We think the support of others was missing when we went back before. We had family and T but very lonely for supportive fellow DDers.

You know we walk with you through this White. Cheering for you already!

Hunny

Thank you Hunny
Excitement and overwhelmed at the same time!!
Support is sooooo appreciated.
I have gotten behind on some things here and said to H this morning "if I can't keep up now, what is it going to be like when I start school???"
That doubt sets in--can I do this???? How many melt downs am I going to have to endure and push thru before I get to the other side--or quit. Then I think of what my friend said--"re think this---you may not be emotionally stable enough for all the stress it involves"

But my daughter in law said "Mom, I know you can do this. it will take some work, but Jon and I can help." They live in NC and both will get PhD;s next yr.

Then thoughts come thru----we are way too stupid to do this---just quit the process now before we prove we will fail.

And I'm fighting those thots.........
