Am interested to know if anyone has ever been diagnosed with any kind of mental illness and later found out that that diagnosis was infact incorrect. I read alot about us wonderful multiples being incorrectly diagnosed prior to the discovery of multiplicity???

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this?

yes I was. years ago (DID) was not recognized in the DSM (Diagnositic Statistical Manual - the professionals bible so to speak for what the criteria for each mental disorder is for a person to be diagnosed with that disorder) So instead of finding out what kind of voices I hear - inside the head and can be traced back to my abuse history and medication does not work on a - when professionals heard the words "yes I hear voices" they automatically assumed with out doing a comprehensive psychological testing with me that I was schizophrenic. Many of us that grew up in the 1960's and 70's were most likely diagnosed incorrectly due to there were little to no testing procedures for Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Now thanks to the DES, DDIS and other dissoicative disorders testing procedures anyone that goes through those battery of tests end up being correctly diagnosed with DID (or without it correctly if they do not have it)

Yes, I was misdx'ed with bipolar, medicated for two and a half years with such high doses of meds that I was a zombie. MD's would show shock and concern at the dosages. I was so chemically restrained that I didn't know I was not doing well. Family finally said, "Something's wrong!"

I took myself off of all the meds. I'd already begun seeing a therapist who said that bipolar wasn't what he felt my dx was, but I didn't know or trust him well at the time, so I continued.

I found out that I was given the dx of bipolar due to "quick changes in mood".

on a slightly different note...my diagnosis from my pdoc is just recurrent depression, but my therapist includes my dissociation and PTSD.....until I try and tell my pdoc what's what.....

sorrel,

Does your pdoc and therapist communicate? I know mine do and that's how they figure out my meds. Might I suggest, if they don't you have your T contact pdoc so they get things right for you?

My pdoc asks me what we're doing in session and I also volunteer other things about dissociating, anxiety, stressors etc so he knows what's going on with me. He also goes through a list of questions everytime I see him. That seems to be a good thermostat.

Just an idea

Thanks everyone. I guess I have been battling with feeling that I have been misdiagnosed - well, knowing that I have been, for a number of years, but just needing some backup on that. Different level of the whole trust thing I guess, in regard to trusting onself. Labels

It's weird cause I have known I was DID for ten years or so and been working on it since then with much success, but something has always prevented me from putting it out there in anyplace other than therapy, not sure what thats all about. Though I s'pose a little mystery in ones life is a good thing.

Thanks again everyone yours posts were most useful
