Traumatic memories really can be repressed, but also restored, say scientists - Telegraph

Scientists have found a brain mechanism that actually represses traumatic memory. They also have found that recreating the state people were in when traumatized can bring up the hidden memories.

DID is real. We will someday know the neurobiology in it. Validation.

I see this article is from the UK. here in america this is old news, its one of the reasons why treatment providers here make sure their clients are stable and have all the self nurturing tools to maintain their present day to day living while at the same time use tools like grounding, relaxation, breathing and other therapeutic techniques before delving into harder topics, problems and issues. they dont want their clients to end up stuck in the past memories that suddenly come to the surface and end up suicidal or self injuring.

also in the UK they may be just finally recognizing DID is real but here in america it has been recognized as real for quite some decades. the only difference here in america is that the diagnostic labeling has changed over the decades from being called hysteria, to MPD to DID. here in america there are documentations of DID way back before 1950's with cases like Shirley Mason (aka Sybil) and Chris Sizemore (aka Eve from the Three faces of Eve case).

Thanks for posting- It sounds like exciting new research. I just wish I could volunteer myself for testing on, so those poor mice don't have to go through that again

yes. that is very true about needing to be stable enough to be able to go through the memories without reverting back to/triggering harmful/unhealthy coping skills/states.

i have felt like maybe i was ready to do just that and do hypnosis to remember things, but i don't think i am as i still find it hard 10 years into seeing my psychiatrist to even sit in her office for 30 minutes to an hour every few months and just generally talk about how i have been doing. so, i am not quite sure i am ready yet even though a lot of harmful coping skills i had in the past have been managed. there is still the potential for decompensating in general and suicidal/self harm issues to arise even while being in a more stable place more often the last few years, so i still am hesitant on doing things to potentially disturb it all.

Im in the USA and this is still exciting and validating to me. There are still people, including doctors, that think DID is bogus. The more research the better. Thank you for sharing

The article is from a publication in the UK but the research is recent by scientists at Northwestern University in Illinois.

The research is not advocating destabilizing people. It accounts for a neurobiological mechanism that can validate the experience of repressed or hidden memories, which has been the source of conflict among professionals for some time. There are some who still think repressed memories are a load of crap. This research shows otherwise. Hence: validation for the DID experience.

Wow, the only thing I can think of is if this drug opens up all the doors, I'd go insane with all the suppressed memories hitting at once. There are some places that I fear going to.
