I was at the doctors with my hubby and my six year old alter looked at the front desk and yelled "look stickers!" Everyone in the waiting room stared at me. Oh man was I embarrassed. My husband grab my arm and I came back. Now I look at it and think it was funny I have to laugh.

LOL, don't you love/hate those moments?

An awkward funny from us: we have started therapy with a new t who doesn't know we have DID (no need for her to know, I reckon). She was seeking info about the father of our children, but unfortunately the one who was out never had anything to do with him and couldn't answer any of her questions. She was trying to hide the fact that she didn't know anything but kinda failed miserably.
The T just looked really confused.
Awwwwkward!

Hi Luce,

You'd prefer your T not know? Is this because she is new to you?
You may need to get to where you've decided you can trust her before disclosing more about your inner life, should you decide to share at all.

Yeah, this is a short term t I have hired for a very specific purpose and it isn't necessary to get into the DID stuff for it. I just want to do the specific thing I need to do right now and don't want to spend time or money explaining something that isn't relevant to the current thing.
I do actually know this t from a long time ago. We first saw her as a minor, and she involved child protection agencies and had us removed from home. So there is some inherent trust and background knowledge with her.
But who knows if she believes in DID or not... not all Ts do, and I really don't want to detract from what we currently need with discussion and angst (on her part) about DID. I did tell her I 'experience dissociation'. And we don't always remember to say 'I' when we are talking about the group rather than ourselves individually. It will be what it will be.

Its hard to believe that some t don't no what DID is. We shouldn't have to educate our therapist about it she or he should know. Shame on them.

True, but I understand it a little. The clinical presentation of DID is very different to the culturally recognized stereotype, so unless a clinician has actually diagnosed a client or had specific professional development about DID many will believe the skepticism about it. Even though the research and understanding about it is growing all the time. Sadly it is just how it is.

It isn't only the DID population that experiences this... a few years ago my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type, and after researching it in an effort to understand her better I realized that I have experienced the exact same symptoms all my life. I made an appointment with my doctor to get a referral to a specialist for diagnosis and treatment.
My doctor listened to me then told me that just the previous week she had attended a professional development workshop about undiagnosed ADHD in the adult population. She said if she hadn't been to that she would not have believed me and not given me a referral, but instead she noted that my history and symptoms were consistent with what she had learned the previous week, so was happy to refer me on.
I guess my point is.... they only know what they know, and given the controversial history of MPD/DID I don't blame them for their skepticism.
I don't think it will always be this way. Understandings are changing.

We are very tired of new Ts. Had 3 in past yr! Not personal..company shifting..blah blah blah. We just stay hidden..try to keep up appearance of United front. Sick of doubters, sick of inquisitions, sick of being told "what DID looks like".... sorry we are people not check lists..we do not all "look" the same! And those of us who have been around for the long ride are not stupid..obviously we are aware of both our individual selves and legal identity. We can create a middle ground being when we don't want to be known. Duh!.. it's just like acting... we have written legal identity character and edited it and practiced it over many yrs. We don't want to be locked up in ward for life...not presenting DID has become just as much a survival skill as our individual functions are. How do so many drs. find this more inconceivable than completely unaware???!!!
