yes and no.. depends upon your own location \countries definitions....

this is getting into the complicated side of things, short version here in america the mental health system recognizes many different kinds of parts...some are dissociative types and some are not.

in general here in my location dissociation is a normal reaction to a trigger... you know how if someone says something you dont like (the trigger) you automatically feel angry (normal reaction)

well dissociation is like that, something happens to make a person feel their dissociation symptoms like feeling numb, feeling spaced out, feeling disconnected from one self or ones environment and those around them.

it becomes a dissociative disorder when it fits the diagnostic criteria for the dissociative disorders in my link at the bottom of my post, these are the recognized dissociative disorders here in america. other locations may go by other standards.

other mental disorders can have any number of alters (your word parts) its just that dissociative type alters are a very special kind. if a person has dissociative type alters then they are diagnosed with a dissociation disorder plus their BPD in other words dual diagnosed.

example some of my diagnosis's before my alters were integrated was PTSD, DID, bipolar disorder, .. in other words I was dual diagnosed (diagnosed with more than one mental disorder) with in each of these came different types of parts. some were the adult, parent child (or as some locations call these the ego, super ego, id, or some locations call this the anp, ep and ish) some were introjects, ....

my point there are as many different kinds of parts as there are people in the world some are normal parts of self that every human being has and some are dissociative, some are not dissociative type alters.

to find out what type of alter you have, contact your treatment providers.

no not all alters are created by the body born or out of dissociation due to trauma....

one example of an alter that is not a dissociative type alter is one that is an hallucination alter...

one that medication induced alter,

one that is psychosis induced, another one a false alter induced due to therapist induced....

I have a friend who has schizophrenia, when his meds are off track and his schizophrenia symptoms are active he hears voices and has alters that tell him to do mean things. tells him people are out to get him...

I know someone else who created false alters (a type of non DID type alter.) in order to please their treatment provider...

another non dissociative type alter in my location is commonly called invisible friends...

my point there are many different kinds of alters....

forgot to add those that I know here in my own off the computer location those with BPD have non dissociative type alters (alters that are there because of medication problems, or are hallucinations and delusions.)

those that I know in my off the computer locations that have both BPD and DID, their treatment providers had to specify on the files which of their known alters were due to medication, hallucinations\delusions and which were dissociative type associated with their having DID.

like already stated my location has strict guidelines on how to tell the difference between psychotic like (hallucinations \ delusions thoughts and alters) vs dissociation\ DID alters.

to find out which a person has they have to contact their own treatment providers who can administer diagnostic tests to discover what mental disorders a person has and which kind of alters they may have.

That is interesting. I think I need a better understanding of the use of the term alter. I understand what you are saying about delusional alters. Where someone can act like a certain way because they believe they are that way based on their delusional state. Can a person produce the same alter when needed? Like switching but actually a product of a delusional state?
Thanks for this!
