I found this presentation by accident and it is really resonating with me. This is kind of what I was asking about in my post last night.

I had no idea about inner families/subselves etc. Take a look!

That looks like an interesting slide presentation (I was unable to read it well because the print was so small), and it looks like it is about the inner family systems model? Different parts play different roles, such as protectors/guardians, young and vulnerable parts, etc. This is a model that appeals to me too and helps me think about my different parts. My parts are ego states rather than the full-fledged alters of DID. (i.e. Mine never "take over" but sometimes I share consciousness.) One thing I liked about this slide presentation is that it tells how to "interview" your parts. Sometimes I have wanted a more consistent way of contacting them but haven't found one. This interview technique sounds promising and I might like to try it. If anyone can figure out how to make the slides larger so that I can read them, please let me know.

Actually Sunny here is the link for the entire website and look for the subselves section. It's called Project 1. You can click on the presentation and it will be bigger. There are also many links to click on to see what each subself means.

I'm debating whether or not to bring this concept up in my sessions. Next week is just a phone session so probably not the best time. Oh well.

I do like what it says and I never knew this all existed. I don't think I'm DID after reading this BUT I can see some parallels.

interesting link! i am DID, and my T says that sshe thinks some of my parts ( subselves, alters) have their OWN parts!! ( alters of their own) and that it is the only way some of my parts can do their job is to have 'helpers'??????...........

Does this make sense to anyone else out there?

Yes...this makes sense to me! Some of my alters have their own system of alters. In some literature this is referred to as subsystems or layers.

I can't get to the bigger version of the presentation Personality subselves

but yeah, I think I actually have only 3 alters, and two of them have their own parts. but I count them as "mine" too.

you know- i think this resonates with me as well.... confusing as all get out.... but the more i learn, the more things emerge. I now have a part that seems younger than some of the others but has better handwriting and drawing than any of us at any age. I've lost count now as to how many, who's who and what their functions are. But if some have sub-sets, then that makes sense. There were 13 the last time I tried to do a mapping - that was before this new part emerged with a totally different way of relating.

May I ask how did each of you get to know your alters?

therapy. and a lot of journaling. i did read about about using the non-dominant hand to draw and journal and learned a LOT that way. but mostly therapy and would see "who" would react to the therapist and then take it out on the body later...
