I was just wondering if anyone else recieves negative feedback based on having DID or any other kind of mental health issues. I sure have got lots of negative feedback and it's all been from people who I use to look up to or my family. I don't know. See I am going to college to be an elementary teacher and there are these people who tell me I can't do it. My T's are completely behind my decision and encourage me to follow through. It's like these other people are crushing my hopes and dreams. Even the voc rehab person I work with, she even has given me negative feedback. I am just so tired of everyone judging me based on the fact I do have mental illness, particularly DID. I just really do not know what to do about it. It hurts. My mom keeps telling me no one will hire me because of the problems I have had. She says they will be able to look on my record and see that I have mental illness.

Well, if you know you can do it and your t is encouraging you, go out there and prove all the negative people what you're made of .... and at the same time prove to the world that having a mental health issue does not stop us from living life to the full if we wish ..... good luck to you, keep us posted and don't listen to them .... listen to YOU sweetie .... be proud, with your ambition you'll make a great teacher .... way to go ... negative feedback get you down?

love, care and lots of hugs, Jinny xoxoxoxoxoxo

Can you research any restrictions your school system may have on teaching elementary? Maybe that would help put your mind at ease.

Jennifer1084,

Hi there. People with DID have had to overcome tremendous obstacles in life. We are creative people with strong wills and bright minds. Often we are deeply compassionate and caring people, too!We just need some help.

I have dealt with the stigma of having "issues" and depression and of course, DID. Rejection is an all too familiar experience and it never seems to get easier to bear. If I could advise you anything it would be this: BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TELL/TRUST ABOUT DID. Sadly, some people (my husband included) refuse to believe DID exists and they can be hurtful about it.

Like others have said here, if your T believes you can do it, don't let the negative family or voc rehab people stop you.

Sadly, people with DID almost always have very negative family histories - family are often the REASON we become DID - to survive their abuse. So they are not the voices you want to heed about career and life.

I'm sure you have many things to offer to the world. Get your education and continue to research. I bet there is someplace where your abilities and strengths will be valued.

Meanwhile, continue to visit and learn from folks here - they are kind and share from their experiences and may be of great help to you.

HUGS from Leslie and the Pixies

negative feedback get you down? negative feedback get you down? negative feedback get you down?

Thank you everyone. I try not to tell people about having DID but either they need to know because they are involved in my care or my mom tells them. I don't know, it just gets really difficult sometimes, I'm sure mostly all of you already know that. That's what I like about this place, its a place we can go to get support. Well anyway, thanks again.

((((((((((((((Jennifer))))))))) I think it's great that you are working toward being a teacher. There are a lot of people with dissociative disorders that are able to keep jobs and do well at them. Sometimes we have to find the right job that works for us but they are out there. While I couldn't do a lot of jobs, there is one that works well for me, even with being DID.

Don't let the ignorant ones hold you back from realizing your dreams.

Awesome that you want to be a teacher
Getting negative feedback from people..especially ones you look up to is tough. Your T believes you can do it,you believe you can do it,right?
So I bet you can prove those negative people wrong
