I have had a sore throat for a few days, but nothing out of the ordinary. I woke up yesterday and my throat was really swollen, but again not too bad.
I have woken up this morning and can barely swallow anything, it's so painful. I am not sure if its related to purging, but thought i'd ask for advice here, as maybe you guys have had experience of this. Does anyone have any idea of how i can clear this up quickly (except not purging, i am not doing that anyway)? Should i gargle with something, or is there any specific tablets i could take?

It could be related to purging or it could be that you are getting unwell - I find when I get the flu I often have a sore throat and trouble swallowing.
Are you able to see a doctor? They can probably look and see if it's a throat problem and give medications that can help clear it if it is some kind of viral cause. |

Thanks for replying Mazing
![]() I don't really want to go to the GP, as i know I'll get questioned about the purging. He never seems to look for anything wrong, just blames everything on the ED and depression.

Really scrub your hands before purging because you could scratch your throat with your nails and cause infections from your dirty nails. Then when done gargle with alcohol free listerine. My glands on the sides of my neck swell out when I purge hard.

Thanks for replying, Moodswing.
I do normally gargle with listerine, but not the AF one, i'll do that. I have rarely had any problems from purging, apart from sore throats, and certainly never this painful.

If you have any other cold symptoms or get a fever it probably is just a bug and not related to the p.....try gargling some warm salt water.

It could be a small tear or scratch in the esophagus. It could also just be minor irritation, if you just started purging again after a long hiatus.
If your GP isn't doing their job, maybe seeing a different GP is a possibility?

To be honest, i quite like that my GP doesn't really 'get' what Bulimia is, or is interested in it. He does his job OK, considering that i dont make it all that easy for him. Poor old guy! Thanks for the reply ![]()

It can definitely be from the purging. If I have a bad day in excess of 4+ times or hard to purge foods then my throat kills. Salt water gargle can help, at the end of the day it's best to try not purge for awhile. Easier said than done, I know.

Thanks Nicole, i definitely think it was from purging as i have been perfectly well otherwise.
I have had this lots before (i have an ED for a very long time, unfortunately), but normally i can pinpoint a particular 'incident' that has caused it, but this came from nowhere. I am much better now. I still hurts a little, but not as bad. Thanks ![]()
