I was dx with bipolar disorder Dec. 2nd. After taking medicine, I gained a lot of weight in a month. I took a BMI calculator and it said I'm overweight. I want to lose weight. I want to be less. It feels so good to starve and I stopped taking my medicine. (Mainly because I couldn't get a refill because I haven't seen the new doctor yet...so I'm like forget it). People tell me I look swollen and pregnant. I'm so embarrassed. I'm scared I have an eating disorder developing but I really don't want help because I want to be smaller.

Hi butterflypower
I am sorry that you feel so down on your appearance. I don't suggest stopping your meds until you see your new doctor but it is your decision. May I suggest talking to your doctor to get you on some meds that are not known to cause weight gain. This is a frank discussion with your doctor that you don't want any meds that have a history of people gaining weight on them. There are some meds for bipolar that don't have that track record. Of course diet is needed but you do not have to starve yourself. Stick to vegies and fruits and oatmeal is a great way to get full and start your day. I would also bring up the fact that you think you have an eating disorder. A T can help you with this. There is hope. ![]() |

Oh yes, this happened to me. I have BPD and eating disorders, but I gained weight on ''mood stabilising'' meds. I've lost all of the weight gained, but at the time I thought I'd never get slim/thin again!! It's a waiting game mostly, meaning that IF your gain IS drug related, then you will probably loose it over the course of time.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I don't have an eating disorder but I feel the same way, I feel fat, I have gained a lot of weight since being on my meds. I'm not sure if there's anything to help that, I am tempted to starve myself every now and then just until I get to a certain weight. Talk to your therapist or pdoc about your concerns, surely they would want to help you.
