Im trying to recover from my eating disorder and gain healthy weight back. For 8 months all I ate was brown rice and cauliflower and I lost all my body fat and muscle. I started increasing my calories slowly a couple months ago but when ever I eat 2,000 a day I get consitpated and the next day I can not eat at all. I haven't been able to eat for two days now, and I can just feel it all in my intestines. Is this normal? How can I fix this, do I need to see a doctor. I just really want to be able to eat normally again. Has anyone ever experienced this? Why wont my body accept calories again?

Hi Paula,
My advice would be either to see a doctor or a nutritialist. Things don't seem to be going right in your body. Naturally it is hard for our bodies to accept change when it has been conditioned to eat the same things for long period of time. It's good to hear that you are going at this slowly, so you'd think after a couple months your body would have adjusted but since its not, you should definatly try to get some real medical advice. I havent really experienced this myself...right before i slowed down my purging I had the opposite problem with having to go to the washroom a lot, and now its stopped I still find myself having to run there every day. Eating disorders are definatly not good for the stomache. But keep at your recovery, feel proud that you are overcomming the monster, and good luck!! |

I agree too. If you haven't started up with regular visits to a doc you have confidence in & who, if you can find one, has expertise in eating disorders, you should do so. This is an imperative step towards recovery! Also, it's really normal for your body to react the way it is (as if in shock) now that you are treating it a little better. Things will ease off and normalize again. This whole process is called "refeeding". Do you have a good therapist? It's a bumpy road towards health. Accept all the help that's offered & that you can find!
