I've been overeating and gained about 35 lbs in the past year, and I'm short so even a few lbs is a lot. I've never had a weight issue before but I know what's going on. I'm waking up in the morning and having handfuls of chocolate or candy in the house. I don't eat much but more junk during the day. It's not the fried food and stuff that gets me, it's the chocolate and the taste of it. I'd rather have that then real food.
Things are going well. I'm in school, relationship is good, family support and involvement. I don't know why, but all I want to do is eat junk. My mom was just diagnosed with Diabetes and is overweight. I know I learned a lot of my bad eating habits from her. I also know how to eat well. I know what I need to do, just don't do it.I don't really know how to stop or how to get this under control. I'm almost on my way to being a binge eater, or so I feel. I'm open to suggestions as to how to get this back on track. |

Hello doggiedo: I don't know that I have much in the way of suggestions for you. What I have found is that not having the stuff in the house is the best answer. I absolutely adore mixed nuts... hey... you are what you eat! Anyway... if I have them in the house I'll keep gorging myself on them until they're gone. So I simply have to not have them in the house. Then I can't gulp them down by the handful.

Hi doggiedo - Sorry things have been rough lately. It's great you're here though, talking about it, and it sounds like your ready for a change. One place to start might be to speak with your doctor about the changes in your appetite. If all you are craving is chocolate in place of whole, it might be good to rule out any underlying medical conditions. The APA has a resource on talking to your doctor about appetite changes on their website.
Working with a therapist who specializes in eating behavior as well as someone who understands cognitive behavioral therapy could be a big help. They could work with you on better understanding any anxiety, stress or emotions influences the situations and work with you to create new habits. - M |

Thanks for your support guys. I actually just checked in with my doc and did blood work to make sure I don't have a Heath issue. All tests came back okay.
I should say I was below weight about 10 years ago and was diagnosed with an eating disorder. I had been pretty sick with an ulcerative color flare and couldn't eat a lot of stuff without it making me sick. I got over the restriction and stuff over the years and haven't really dealt with those urges in about 5-6 years. I still deal with self loathing but idk. I just moved a few months back and haven't established a psych doc yet. Maybe it's time?? I can't guarantee I have a ton of time for it though, as I'm back in school for my degree full time and working full time. |
