Hi I just started therapy recently for the first time in over 10 years and was wondering if it is normal that my therapist wants to see me twice a week?
Thanks for this!

Hello there, welcome to Psych Central!

Yes therapy can be as much or as little as you want it to be. Some people have a couple of sessions a week and then drop it down to once a week, then every two weeks and so on. Some people carry on the therapy for years, it really depends on your issues but you want to make sure you finish the therapy when you are ready. It needs to be a partnership between you and the therapist, working together.

Agreed. While the typical rate is seeing a therapist once a week, it's not unheard of for a therapist to request twice a week, especially when getting started and understanding that the increased frequency is going to be more beneficial to you.

However, it is your choice, since you're the customer. If you'd rather just do once weekly, just let them know and they should be fine with it.

Best,
DocJohn

I see my T once a week most of the time, but on occasion if I'm going through a particularly rough patch I'll see her twice a week.
Thanks for this!

When I was in intensive psychotherapy it was through the Veteran's Admin. I saw my psychologist once/week, but during the week I wrote him a letter (this was before email) and I could give him a quick phone call anytime during office hours.
Thanks for this!

My sister was seeing her T twice a week, and she is now down to once a week. I think it depends of the problem that you are having...

Well, ask yourself this: Is it normal not to see your therapist twice a week?

I usually do once a week, but with a prior Therapist I started seeing her once every other week after we had met for a few months and I sort of wish we had kept it once a week.
