I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with being married to an alcohol abuser. How do you know when it's just time to leave? And maybe more important how do you find the strength to do it when sober you still love them

Sorry to hear of this difficult predicament. You might get more responses if you post on the forums that cover addictions and alcoholism: Addictions - Forums at Psych Central

i know when my sons father was abusing alcohol, it would change his whole personality. it got to the point where i had to call the police to get my son and i out of our apartment. i had to find a place for us to live but did do it. i did still love him but he was bad for my own mental health. we havn't seen him in 10 years and are both happy about it.

As someone who has seen alcohol and substance abuse from both sides, I would say the time to consider leaving is when it is affecting your physical and/or mental health and your partner is taking no steps to address the issue. Your own health, wellbeing and ultimate happiness is paramount.

Have strength.

Dave.
