So sometimes I submit things into Crime Stoppers, knowing someone or a place is doing something illegal. I don't do this all the time. I do have question about something...

What if I knew about things or people that I haven't reported but want to? In terms of not a huge crime but more of the cash reward? In a sense I am helping the community deal with illegal, dangerous, or other things to make it safer? Is it bad that I know so much and I am happy submitting these things to them anonymously hoping to receive a cash reward in the end? Even if they were somewhat in my life or known them personally or something?

There is this person/place that I really don't like and I know X amount of information about it knowing it's illegal and I want a reward from it, is that bad?

Is this a bad way of getting revenge if that is what it's called?

I was told we do not get blue ribbons for doing things we already ought to be doing, and I believe getting revenge is not something we ought to be doing. Reporting something for the sake of justice for someone else or something that might help make life better for many is something much different, however, and then anything ranging from "Thank you!" or "Well done!" to a fistful of cash would be icing on the cake!

To me,it is wrong and yes, definitely bad.

I would not report someone, even anonymously, for any amount of money! There's a saying where I am from: "snitches get stitches and end up in ditches",and it's said for a reason!
Thanks for this!

the only way crime stoppers actually pays anyone is ....if....it is your tip/ your call... that lead to the arrest, no arrest no money, someone elses call before your call leads them to this person and the person is arrested you dont recieve any money.

since you already use the program you understand how it works right... in case you forgot.... when you phone or text in your tip to the tipline you receive a number and if you see on the news this person was arrested you take that number to the bank they told you on the phone or in the text. the bank verifies the number and verifies that crimestoppers deposited money into that account to be given to you, the bank gives you the money.

it doesnt matter if you are in it for the money or for stopping crime. bottom line is it has to be your call , your text that leads to the arrest of the person doing the crime. no arrest, no money.

also something you might not be aware of ... in some locations false tips\ reports of crimes due to being angry or not liking someone, can lead to the tipster being arrested for hindering the police and other crimes. so you want to be real sure this person is on the crime stoppers list of criminals they are trying to find or that this person really is breaking the laws in your location.

I don't believe in karma. To me it holds a negative attitude.

Crime Stoppers can't trace where it came from, nor anyone else. Only way they would know is if I flat out told someone or them. Crime Stoppers never asks for your name, address, etc. so to me that is safe, my name isn't attached to anything. They only know what you tell them.

Then how could get a reward?

That should not be your motive. That isn't ethical.

crimestoppers is police organization that show cases criminals on tv then asks views to call in if they can help locate that criminal. when you call in crimestoppers assigns you a case number which is a bank account number. if your call results in crimestoppers arresting the show cased criminal, crimestoppers deposits money in the bank account. you take that number to the bank, the bank takes the number looks it up on their computer and verifies its a valid account number and that there is money in that account. then the bank with draws the money and gives you the money.

I really have problems with this. First and foremost are the ethical issues. Money should not be your motive for setting things right, rather a sense of duty.

You seem to have a compulsion to do this. Is it attention seeking? It doesn't seem healthy to me and I wonder if any of this is delusional. Regardless, talk to your therapist or psychatrist about this obsession.

If you in fact are in such a position to know about these multiple cases of law breaking, you are hanging with the wrong crowd and not living in the safest of locations.

here in america you do not have to be hanging with the wrong crowd to know about multiple law breaking. anyone who goes to public school hears about and sees those who do commit crimes, if you are driving you can see who is dealing drugs and other crimes. we also have tv shows like crime stoppers, americas most wanted and other crime documentaries where the police air on public tv their crime cases and ask those watching the show to call in if they have heard of or know of or have witnessed the criminal or crime going down. we also have proactive organizations where normal people actually keep an eye open and prevent crimes from happening and keep logs of multiple suspicious situations. this is called neighborhood watch programs. the police and other enforcement agencies are now also in our public schools if not for ensuring students safety but also for crime awareness and prevention programs....

my point a person in america does not have to be hanging with the wrong crowd to know their neighbor or that person down on the corner is committing crimes. All it takes is a person willing to not turn a blind eye to crime to be able to see it going on around them.

Wow, my take is very different. They offer rewards because they want to entice people to report. No, I don't think it's wrong to report on someone for the reward. If you're reporting on them just because you're angry at them, that's something else. Do I wish you would do it even if there wasn't a reward, yes. But if they offer a reward and it entices you to report, well, that's the point.

Im sorry if my reply was not the one you were looking for, but I find nothing funny or humorous in your post. in my location people do hang out with the wrong crowds for many reasons, and in my location sometimes it is a compulsion to do things for money others might not otherwise do, you asked a serious question that many would normally ask.. whether they were doing this for attention or if it was an obsession with them ...

my point I saw no joke or anything of a humor or funny nature in your post which is what facetiously means in my location.

I took the original poster as putting forth a serious situation and asking a serious question.

A good argument.

A shame what this says about our society though.

Amandalouise. Yes, you were spot on. I reread my entry and it was in fact frivolous and uncalled for. I was in serious error. My apologies to you, the original poster, and others.

As for the content, I found it shocking that one individual would have so much contact with crime and police matters. I stand behind my hoping that the OP would evaluate their environment.

I was asking a serious question, it's not funny nor okay to be judging me based on a choice I am doing. I would not change that at all.

No one knows the entire context of the situation nor am I at any position to provide.

I was the victim of something that happened in a workplace. I knew about all kinds of illegal things that went on. I broke when my previous boss never stood by me, so I walked out cause I had enough and my boss never cared.

I am preventing many others getting hurt.

You see and hear things that you don't want to. That maybe you don't want your name attached to it because those people have others who would track you down. I don't care if I go straight to the police to report it. I do so on Crime Stoppers as it's safe, anonymous, no one knows it came from me, there isn't even a trail to prove it.

Unless any of the posters here have been a victim of hiding illegal things, you don't understand my situation at all. Why would I want others working there where the possibility of them getting hurt or caught up in it?

I asked a serious question, this isn't a debate on what is right or wrong, it is simply not a debate.

Yes, I am pissed off at what happened. Sure maybe that is making me report it. But why would I want others to get hurt in the process where they no nothing? Doesn't make sense... Go ahead judge away because that already has happened... which shouldn't be happening anyways. But thanks.
Thanks for this!

I wasn't judging. Like I said, I think you should report and collect the reward. Don't let what others think bother you. People will have their opinions, and that's okay.

But don't forget that you specifically asked whether it was bad or not,so members were simply answering your question. You should have assumed not everyone would say yeah,it's good.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
