Hi All

Anyone out there who loves growing houseplants?

I have 22 plants of various species and I love growing them. Some are getting quite tall and will need to be pruned back before they touch the ceiling, lol.

I used to work at a garden shop, and although I didn't like the jobs much, I did quite like looking after the houseplants.

Orchids were my favourite. My grandma has loads of them and I love seeing how beautiful they look when all the flowers come out.

I bought my girlfriend a hanging basket plant for Mothers day. I killed it. It had purple flowers and the salesperson said it was a very hardy plant. I watered it everyday and it all turned brown and died. I give up on plants.

Maybe you watered it too much and drowned it by accident? I always make sure to check and see if the soil is dry before I water.

I saw those little nifty glass ball do-dads on TV that you put in the pot and it apparently is supposed to perfectly water your plants...I wonder if it really works? If it did I don't think I'd buy them anyways. I take some joy out of watering plants and cutting of their dead leaves and such

I researched those aqua globe things myself and from what I found out they're not really any good because the tip gets plugged up with soil. They also only water your plants for maybe 2 - 3 days at best.

While they are very pretty, I'll just stick with watering my plants once a week.

While I have a lot of plants, I don't have any hanging plants unfortunately. If I did though, I'd get a spider plant too.

I think they are are really cool looking especially when they are loaded with baby spider plants.

I love houseplants, but I usually manage to kill them. I am so jealous of my T, she has about 20 orchids in her office.

Outdoor plants I am better at keeping alive. I want to get good at raising roses.

When I was younger and lived in Nevada, (up in a tiny north-eastern town hundreds of miles from any large city), I developed the hobby of growing house plants. I even taught myself how to sterilize and mix outdoor soils to accomodate the high volume I needed, as I had my entire house filled with them over the years.

What started out to be a couple plants, turned into well over 120. It came so natrual for me to grow anything. Dad used to say that walking into my house reminded him of a tropical forest...the atmosphere of all the lush greenery and the additions of the sound of my parrots squacking...lol.

Since, I moved so many times that lost plants here n there, gave away to ease the trama from the many transitions.
I know this sounds funny but, plants do have feelings, and moves do upset them. I would have never believed it but, plants thrive on loving words, too....lol.

Discovered silks don't requite water..tho they do require the occassional washings that the live do. They just aren't as sensitive....lol. Not as rewarding to grow tho....they just don't seem to change much....LMAO.

I like plants also but don't do well with houseplants. I was given one when I had my gastric bypass surgery and almost killed it so I gave it to my Grandma and she nursed it back to health and it is thriving at her house and she loves it so it is giving her joy so it lives at her house. I do better with outdoor plants.

I have 2 big planters outside my front door with herbs in them. I noticed today when I went out to get my mail that I should be able to harvest some of my parsley and oregano soon.

Although I'm not familiar to what might work for your kitties...I do recall a plant you do NOT want in the home with pets.

There's a floor plant called Dumb Cane. It is not recommended for any home to have this plant with small children or pets, as if they were to place into mouth the plant contains a poison which effects the vocal cords..hense the name Dumb.
I can't remember the exacts on it, but if i do recall correctly, most indoor plants which contain multi-colored (or varied tones) on leaves indicate a possible poisonous element within them...tho I cannot be certain of that, I believe the plant is of the Pothos species... (hobby of mine was 20+years ago....sorta have forgotten the details...sorry).

I know this is all quite vague but hope it helps some.

I used to have loads of plants until my cats came along. I tried growing cat grass, basil, lettuce and parsley in pots on the window sill but they eat my flowers, ferns, peace lilies, and the conker tree I'm trying to grow from seed. Now I'm growing cactii, I miss having pretty greens around the house.

Hi Everyone

Regarding the issue of cats, I think I remember reading something about a spray you can buy that will keep them out of your plants. I don't know how effective it would be though.

I think the best thing to do is just erect some sort of barrier or something that will keep them from attacking the plants.

Some people grow their plants inside an empty fish aquarium tank... that would definitely keep the kitties out, if you have a top or a lid for the tank.
Thanks for this!

I love plants and gardening! unfortunately because of I am not going to be at home much longer and well I won't have an actual permanent place to do a garden at for a few years while finishing up college I can't have one. But I love house plants! I have a provence lavender plant I want to grow mint and sage, and I found a type of cactus I want, it's called a tiger's jaw, it's so tiny and precious and will bloom yellow flowers in the sun. It's really theraputic for me to have something to nurture, and the greenery makes me so chipper n_n

Personally, I love them, but I've always had really bad luck at keeping them... I think they call it a black thumb. Anyone know of any houseplants that are difficult to kill? Maybe I could try again?

Cactuses, oh and lavender is very hardy, I like to pick plants I don't have to water that much. Or can take long peroids of neglect, because err I'm a bit forgetfull occasionly. most herbs are hardy and easy to grow and useful!

I wish you luck Sweetpea

oh I want to know, does anyone name their plants? I named my lavender plant Artemis
