But they are getting to me this morning. Why does it seem they are winning sometimes, but other times I don't feel that way so much?

Never really sure why it happens. One thing: I watched the Delaware senatorial campaign debate last evening. Maybe "they" are winning. I found I could not think straight, watching and listening to it.

I admire that you could sit through it. I watched a bit, but get so turned off at debates that aren't.

I keep putting myself in the place of one of the debaters, trying to do a better job than he is -- and feeling that I am failing (again) to cope with the buzz saw. And even the questioners are parts of the problem, not solutions, as I want them to be.

As I said to someone else this morning, I need a vomit "smilie".

Illegitimi non carborundum is a Latin phrase meaning "Do not make illegal copies of this disk." It is also sometimes mistaken to mean "**** the system" by people without a sense of humor.

I use to think I was a thicko if I didnt understand politics, then I begun getting interested, or at least feigning interest thinking it would lift me from my social standing, then I realised I was blessed all along, I just dont understand nor wish to be interested in politics lol!!

(((( pachy ))))

My stepdad observed once, "Ever notice that there are a lot more horses' asses in the world than there are horses?"

PS - people who don't know Latin shouldn't venture a translation. That phrase originated back in WWII times, when disks didn't even exist yet.

the translation would be "one ought not to be ground down by the bastards" (if there really is such a word as carborare, doubtful). it should read illigitimis non carborundum est. Not a disk in sight.
Thanks for this!

I learned many years ago that Illegitimi non carborundum is a joking way to say "don't let the bastards grind you down". This morning they are grinding me down. I don't know why they get to me some times and not so much other times.

OK guys. Feelings can get hurt; we all learned to be sensitive. It's OK.

It's fake Latin; carborundum is literally silicon carbide, an abrasive material used in manufacturing things that need that abrasive material

All I saw of the Delaware debates (I think) was 10 seconds of people standing on the steps at the U. of Delaware library where I was early in the summer to do some research. I don't do any listening to anyone if I don't like their TV ads. If you want me to buy you, you have to have a darn good ad!

The news, including politics is so depressing that I don't watch it. Before this thread gets moved since it doesn't seem to be about therapy, I want to say that I watched the miners being rescued in Chile, coming out 1 by 1, after 69 days trapped underground and it was very emotional and heartwarming to see!

I do like to listen to them, but I get frustrated when I don't hear what I want to hear, or feel like the candidates have no clue, or that their priority isn't getting things done that need to be done.

rainbow8, I watched as much of the miners coming up as I could. It was so interesting. I really enjoyed watching the people and noticing the differences in culture. I was intrigued by how emotionally aware so many were. The first rescuer to go down stated he could 'feel all the love' from the miners when he arrived. Some of the men above ground who greeted the emerging miners were touched and had tears in their eyes. Everyone just seemed so ... I don't know.. centered? The last miner up repeatedly told the president of Chile that he hoped it would never happen again. Understandable, but what amazed me was that he spoke to the president as an equal.
And lastly, I don't know what comment or question was put to him, but he said "We were ALL psychologists down there."
It was inspiring to watch, very happy outcome!

Pach m'dear, I don't think that watching debates is very therapeutic even for someone who is inside the Beltway.

Serenity now

How do you stand it? (the debates, ignorance, government, all of it?)
For what it's worth, you seem to have lots of patience. It could come in handy especially with people who have agendas other than your original post.

What is "fake Latin"? Isn't that an oxymoron? (or some type of moron?)
Ok I'm becoming hostile now...I'm out.

Pachy thank you for posting this thread. Illegitimi non carborundum is something that my husbands grandmother had on a wood plack hanging on the wall of her home. I always asked her what it meant and she always told me 'seize the day'. I of course looked it up on line and LOL!! - needless to say she was not only a wise woman but one with a witty sense of humor. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegitimi_non_carborundum )

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia..............................

Illegitimi non carborundum is a mock-Latin aphorism meaning "Don't let the bastards grind you down". (Carborundum is an industrial abrasive material.)

As for politics - BLAH!

Sometimes I don't.

I suppose it is a useful lesson in human nature. Reptilian brain, and all that. Still, I could do with more support for the other part of the brain...

I'm sorry you are having a hard time, pachyderm. I also find politics extremely triggering and have to be careful with my exposure to it all.

The talking points and rote answers are so upsetting to me because it seems like a lot of politicians treat the debates like they are clever word games. They seem to forget that they are playing those games with the lives of millions of people and they don't give the issues the thought and care that they deserve. When I was in school (I say like I am a million years old), we had to bring facts and sources to our debates, not just rhetoric.

Sorry to go on a rant there, but I just wanted to tell you that I hope you feel better soon. Maybe it would be safer to read a text version of the debates if you want to keep up on the news. That way you don't have to look at their smug faces.

I know, pachy. It's frustrating. I have to force myself to take much of an interest, and then I preferr to read the material instead. the showmanship and the righteous intoning and all the rest of it just irritates me to the point of wanting to scream . we just got done with the Swedish voting. Now on to the US elections. Sigh. Too bad that it is such a circus. I doubt any one who tried to do things differently could even have a chance at election.
