Lithium took care of my thyroid function and also my kidneys. They were stable for some years. Not great but 2 years ago they started to get worse. I was at stage 4 and stage 5 is dialysis and looking for a transplant.
The only thing I could do is go on a kidney support diet. Taking the stress off the kidneys and help regulate what healthy kidneys do. My last tests showed no improvements but no decrease in function either.
I had pretty much accepted that my life would be shortened because of this.
But,,,today at my check up, the blood work shows that I am in stage 3 and my doctor said that I could stay there for quite a while.
I can't tell you how happy I am. The kidney support diet must be working for me. Knowing all this it gives me hope and encouragement to stay on it.

Thank you everyone...
I am hoping that I will be able to maintain this function for a while. My doc thinks yes..we will see what my specialist has to say this summer. I walked my results over to his office to make sure he has them.
Life is short enough without restricting dairy, protein, potatoes, tomatoes and bananas to mention a few. I had a prescription from my doctor that I met with my nutritionist to help me. This is to maintain health.
Unless your kidney function is compromised there is really no need. Lithium was my culprit but some pain medications and others can effect kidney function too. My doc was pretty adamant about Advil/Ibuprofen.
So if you are on Lithium be sure to have your thyroid and kidney function monitored. If starting it make sure you have tests to see if you might be at risk.
Kidney desease does not hurt and unless you have the right tests you may not know.
