Hello everyone,

In my 19 short years on this earth, my experience has been that all New Year's resolutions have been set with the best of intentions...and then I never follow through with them. I don't like the idea of using January 1st as a possible excuse to not try to reach goals until that date, because there is somehow something magical about the first day of the year. I am not trying to bash anyone who does use January 1st as a starting point - setting goals and working towards them is great!

But in the past, I'd treat the New Year like something magical: "This year will be different, it's a new year, a new start!" Now I don't see anything special about January 1st, really. It's just another day. If a goal comes to mind, then I start on that same day. No waiting until the next year for me.

Can anyone else relate?

I can wholeheartedly relate. I was told the best day to start a diet is a Wednesday weighin etc because you take that artificial "beginning" (week month year etc) I do have resolutions but they aren't dependent this year on complete perfection and if I fail waiting for the next year to try again. I am living my life now, completely no matter what the date.

I do not feel January 1 is magical but I do believe it can be a good new start. Using a specific date or time period to bracket my efforts makes it easier to keep track. If this week is just as good as last week or next week, I might as well wait until next week to start?

I think my problems with goal setting is I either start too large or I do not have a specific, easy to follow plan that is (1) challenging (2) attainable (3) specific (4) time limited (5) positive (6) flexible.

I'm not planning on setting myself goals (set in concrete). I know what I want from 2012 and that is..... be healthier, take control of my bp, progress further in life as a talented adult

This will come and I know it will. I just need time to make it all fall into place. I use to make resoluutions but always broke them after the 1st week lol!

I know I can stop biting my nails, lose weight, gain control over BP I just need faith and patience
Thanks for this!

I'm on the same page. Not treating the NY as anything magical or special. No resolutions either.

I never make New Year's resolutions. I've always found the ideal to be kind of lame. So, it's not an age thing (cause I'm past 41 yrs).

I believe that if I want to start or stop doing X, then I will now. I don't give a hoot about the date.

Although, I think that I get Perna's point about the tasks being easier to keep track of if kept to the first of whatever month, for record-keeping. That makes some sense to me. But, I'll stick to my way

I have a need/goal for January 25 and another for February so I have a couple specific things planned for "January", starting tomorrow that also have the potential to help me the rest of the year.

I do not make any resolutions. I find the best time for me to make changes is in the springtime, that is when I feel the best.

While I can see the usefulness of using a particular date to start a change, I don't make New Years resolutions. Like most of the others who've answered I make changes when the time is right for the change, not byu a date on the calendar.

What I do like to do on New Years Day is to reflect back on the previous year..

Nope...I'm not. I have for years & noticed that I never achieved them so I stopped. There's no sense in keep saying you're going to do something different & better, but you actually never do it. So my motto is actions speak louder than words. I'm not going to continue to talk about it...I'm going to be about it.

Nope. There seems to be something about having a whole new 'fresh' year ahead that makes people want to so desperately change. But things never do. Sorry feeling a bit pessimistic atm.
