I live in Michigan, but I will sometimes say "wicked smart"(but not smaht), and I use the words brilliant and sorted in the British fashion.
Thanks for this!

I grew up in Maine, and I had a very strong northern accent. Eventually I made my way to Florida. Now my accent is kind of mixed. By the way Gaia67, I love your avatar. I am a big fan of Doctor Who. In fact I am sporting my Doctor Who shirt right now.

off topic, but related i think...

gaia and piraeus; you both have greek names. i'm sure gaia you know that your name means 'earth' in ancient greek and piraeus, your name is the name of the city that is the major shipping port in greece.

the greek (not geek) in me just HAD to point that out!

I'm not from Appalachian Ohio (more like the Allegheny Plateau), but I go to school there.

I pronounce Appalachian as "Ah-pah-LAY-shin," but the regional pronounciation is "Ah-pah-LATCH-uhn".

I stick to my city talk.

I am from Western New York, but now live in Southern Ontario. I don't use much slang, but WOW do the canucks love their "regional speak". Especilly around the game of curling---it's taken me 10 years to decipher most of it, and I'm still figuring some out.

To make matters more complicated, the gang husband grew up with LOVE to make up their own terminology for different things---funny adjectives, great descriptors---just playing with the language. I don't know if that's common in Canada, but it really threw me when I first got here.

I grew up outside of Pittsburgh and moved to Upstate New York a few years ago. I find myself calling people, "yunz" and asking for "gum bands (rubber bands)". I call people "nebby (nosey)". Years ago there was a beer commercial for a local beer called Fort Pitt. Their slogan was, "Fort Pitt. That's it!". I sill say "Fort Pitt:" at the end of meetings, etc.
