Getting a tattoo is something I am seriously considering, and I already have a design chosen (it's a symbol of something important to me). However, as my GF said, it is permanent, and I feel somewhat nervous because I don't know if this is what I want 20 years from now. How can you make a permanent choice and not have doubts?

Does anyone here have a tattoo? How did you reconcile doubts you had and how do you feel about having it done?

I just got mine today. Well, yesterday as it's after midnight.

I don't think you can predict how you will feel in 20 years. All you can do is make the best choice you can now. I wanted the same design for a long time before I got it, and even after I made up my mind to definitely go for it I waited a few months to see if I changed my mind, which I didn't. It's somewhere that's easy to hide, also.

For me personally it partly comes down to the meaning, not just the look. I actually got two separate tattoos on the same day but to me they are all part of the same thing. Even if I change my mind about how they look, that won't change what they meant to me at the time.

I decided ultimately I would regret NOT doing it more. And it also helps that they aren't trendy designs and I'm getting them for me, I'd still have got them even if nobody was ever going to see them. Hope that helps!

I have eight and I love them all. Even the spur of the moment ones. they show who I am I honestly just went and did it, didn't over think it.

I knew I wouldn't regret them or the future ones I'm planning on getting because they're all symbolic. The symbol will be the same and mean the same when I'm 70

Try waiting a few months and see if you feel the same way about your choice then as you do now. Its a pretty huge indicator

I completly agree with this advice, I sat on the idea for a couple of years before I got my first, and while it is very important and personal to me I ended up getting it in a place where if I change my mind in 10 years noone, not even me can see it unless I want them to.

I have given them all alot of thought, and reallt think of the implications - social acceptance, job interviews etc when deciding exactly what I have and where on my body I have it
