Some could argue that electricity is something discovered and not invented, but it is still a good answer.

Ctrl-c ctrl-v.

Copy/paste on a computer. Ok it might not be the greatest in the history of mankind but how important is the fact that you can copy a file or text or a photo and put it somewhere else? How big a deal is it that contracts can be modified on the fly and sign immediately? All that started with ctrl-c ctrl-v. I say it is as big as dynamite (and as dangerous in the wrong hands)

what a great question

I think one of the greatest is the scientific ability to develop vaccines to eradicate and/or contain diseases.

I like some of the suggestions so far, especially vaccines and writing. In addition to those, I'm particularly fond of indoor plumbing.

I agree with Language as it is the foundation of all of our knowledge.

The Wheel-magnified our mobility many fold

Controlling Fire-cooking meats made food easier to digest, allowing for more higher brain functions to develop

The Pulley, the Lever, the Fulcrum,-are the essential basis of all of our machines.

Roads-rapidly increased economic growth.

electric lighting-increased our ability to operate safely at night

The assembly line-rapid production of goods, lowering costs of owning them

Powered Flight-shrank the world for us.

TV-its often a swamp-but it is a very powerful communication tool

Microchips-the basis of all our computing devices

The Internet-this one is pretty obvious

3D printing will revolutionize production in years to come.

As you guys can tell, I have played a lot of the "Civilization" series.

Dams or levies. Quite a few cities would be under water without them.

Many can argue that language is the result of the evolution of an innately human trait and wasn't invented. Are gestures and body language considered to be language?

Stains that were used for artwork in primitive times & went up from there, in different environments as time passed.

Man's need to create art has been around for centuries.

The Printing Press - This may seem unimportant, but it truly is. Gutenberg's press, with its movable type, started the idea of publishing oral knowledge or multiplying exissting, hand-written books. This may actually be the reason why so many people turned their backs on Christianity, putting a Bible in the hands of anybody who wanted one. The Church no longer possessed the absolute truth, and thus the independently thinking individual emerged as the key unit of society. In the longer term, publishing universalized literacy.
