My mother's birthday is coming up in April, (her and half my family's, but I digress) She'll be turning 62, and a beautiful 62- mind you, and I would like to get her an assortment of nail polishes, but when I was looking around for suiting colours (she has a glamorous, light cinnamon colored skin) I find posts about how to avoid certain colours if you are an older woman.

Is that fair? I would think that a personality outweighs someone's age (and gender, and physic) Don't older women have the right to paint their nails the same as they did 20, 30 or even 40 years ago? After all, our nails aren't as old as we are, lol.

At the same time, I don't want to embarrass her or put her on the spot if she disagrees with me; it's hard to read her at times, sometimes she's very open-minded and free, while at other times she's very conservative. Also, she's very bright, if I brought up nail polishes now, she'll catch on and ruin the surprise. (No, it is not too early; they (my family) are the 'search in the closet, shake the gift box' type)

What do you think? Is worrying about age and nail colour silly? Or do you think there's a cut off point for certain colours? If you do, what colours would you suggest? Which should I avoid? Should I just go out and get her a laptop or patio furniture instead?

Thank you so much for your time! It all truly helps!

I think a selection of nail polishes is a great idea. I'm middle aged and wear all sorts of bright and sparkly colours. I'd think about what colour clothes she wears and then try to find colours that would go well with her wardrobe.

Ooooh, nail polish! I think a woman can wear any color she chooses, just like wearing a different color top everyday. There are nail polish websites where you can virtually try on colors. Pick tints that look good on her skin shade. Certain colors look weird on me. Also, pick spring colors so spring will hurry up and get here!

I think any color she enjoys is okay. I volunteered at a rest home for a while and painted the patients nails. Their favorite was red and it look gorgeous on them. Any thing she would feel comfortable with would be fine as long as it makes her feel pretty.

Depending what she likes... I would buy a selection of some "classic" colors (sparkly and non sparkly, various colors and hues). Red is okay, maybe some pinks and "frosty" colors (sparkly light hues).

Maybe avoid the ultramodern stuff as neon green for now, you can get that for the next occasion if she expresses a desire for that.

Nail Polish is nice! Maybe a maroon color, or light pink. Some neutral colors like mauve and a really light pink might be what she'd like.

I believe color of nails is more about personality than age. I was doing paperwork at the hospital to draw my CBC and the clerk remarked that she liked my bright blue nail polish, that her grandmother often wore that color.

My sister got me a 15 piece set of OPI nail polish for Christmas. OPI is my fav brand.

What a fun gift! You could also include a small tube of peppermint cream for an extra special touch.

I'd go for the brand Essie. Reason is it is a little thinner and slightly less glossy then some of the other brands such as opi. It is thick enough to apply one coat but I recommend seche quick dry top coat. The colors range from fashion to classic so you could get a nice variety. Unless she is really eclectic and where's bright artsy clothes I would stay away from sparklies. For her fun side go for fun colors instead. Just my opinion.

Does she do toes? You can be much riskier with toes.

If you give her several, why not do a few more conservative and a few fun? I totally disagree with sticking to certain colors for older women, I think it is fun if they use less dark skin toneish stuff!

Is there a way to do it so she can choose her own colours? I have never used nail polish, but I imagine particular colours are pretty important in any self-expression or adornment.

Thanks so much for all the responses! It seems like it's unanimous, the colour should match the spirit. I've got some great advice from all of you, and greatly appreciate your time and responses! Thank you all SOOO MUCH!

I'm almost 60 and agree with the others. Pick colors you think she'll like, that go with the color clothes she wears and go with her skin tone.

Someone suggested not black. I wear black some times. I don't even see anything "wrong" with the neon colors if you think she would like them.

My mom is over 60 and gets her nails done. She favors darker colors, blues, greens, and purples. She doesn't like bright neon colors, oranges or pinks. But those are just her preferences. You can choose whatever you like best.
