Anybody encountered this situation... when you are looking in store for some clothes and shoes, the clerk tries to offer you something and you say you don't like it and they go to tell you how it's "fashionable/trendy".

It just doesn't make sense to me.

If I cared about fashion, I would already know what is and what is not trendy and would shop accordingly. If I don't care, I won't be convinced.

And by the looks at me, it should be clear I am pretty anti-fashionable. Maybe they are trying to save my soul, but it will not work.

And please, don't try to pass off high heels to me as latest word in fashion. These been around forever. I am not adding any inches to my already freakish height. And I don't care it's "fashion". It's also PRAGUE, with cobble stones and escalators, tram tracks and stairs. Yes, I get it, some women posses the superpower of being able to walk in heels on any surface (Ukrainian and Russian woman especially. I admire their ability, but I can't do it).

(it's interesting though that most people here wear normal shoes. No heels, no sparkly non-sense on them, no bright colors. I wonder where they buy em).

All the time. I'm a t-shirt and jeans guy. Always have been and always will be. Clerks in clothing stores coming rushing to me like one of the Koch brothers and a penny. It's like I have a fashion handicap.

But I make hipsters look like they're just following the trends ... which they are.

No one would even dare to argue that to me. But then again, I shop in thrift stores.

I was looking for a job-interview shirt a few months ago at a fancyish thrift store. There was some designer shirt I tried on. It was far too tight and shiny bright. The store owner said, "The other one is safe, but in this one you'll be noticed." No thanks. I got the safe one. I don't need people staring at my chest.

Sadly, a lot of stores only pay people on commission or put unrealistic 'quotas' they must sell or else they have the loss of the job hanging over their heads.
I tend to stick with thrift stores, Walmart or places like Ross so I don't have to put up with the pressure.
Fashion is the one area of my life that I have not allowed myself to conform to. There's pressure to conform everywhere in this crazy world. I figure, I need to at least be comfortable in my clothes while dealing with the chaotic craziness of being told I don't measure up in life.

This is why I hate clothes and shoe shopping. I've found going in there with a real dirty look on your face makes them steer clear

Most places, I shop, don't have to worry, though, one consignment shop, the owner sometimes grabs pieces of interest. One dress, was a couple sizes down, at the time, but she recommended trying it on, anyways. She has an eye, for what will fit me. It's even a petite, rofl...which I am far from

Trendy? Tell her, in the States, flat is in

I am the original thrift store shopper from way back before it was trendy, and I imagine I am not alone in that.
Shopping online just solves all sorts of problems for me now though...the world is my new favorite store.

I am comfortable saying "no it's not my style"

BUT....I really really wish that stores would have stickers you could put on as you enter, clearly communicating the fact that you DON'T NEED HELP...

Here ALL salespeople will ask you if you need help. Every one that works there. So if you go for some retail therapy, the possibility exists that up to 15 people will approach you all asking the same thing in the same way.....FIFTEEN!!!!!

If I could choose, the stickers would say "leave me the hell alone"....

My brother once gave an amazing description of overly cocky pushy sales people - they are representing those who have never been put in their place with a punch in the nose lol I will never forget those words lol

I think it's one of those perverse laws of the universe that when you want help in a store, there's not a clerk to be found, or they ignore you, or they're all gossiping amongst themselves; and when you want to browse on your own, the clerks swarm all over you like bees to honey.

I haven't run in to this often, fortunately. But I did study sales and representation, and I can tell you they're going about things the wrong way :P.

I think unfortunately, as others have said, some people are paid on commission or have quotas to fill and they fear losing their job. This is an impractical sales method which in the long run actually reduces the amount of sales because it leads to a pushy, unpleasant environment. Then people will not return, or will leave without purchasing anything because they feel pressured and uncomfortable. Sadly, a lot of businesses are short sited in this regard, and if sales drop they will blame the sales people, as opposed to the inefficient methods they teach them.

I don't give a dead possum's butt for what's fashionable or trendy. I'm wondering if muttering slowly through your teeth, softly at first with an ever-increasing volume, "I. Said. NO!" would scare them off? Couple this with flashing Jack Nicholson eyes....

LOL....just let them know you have a mental illness.....that will back them off.

No seriously......I don't often shop in stores like that but when I was an computer firmware engineer & had some money..lol.....I shopped in more of those kinds of stores....but I've always been one who they don't really seem to bother....& when they ask if they can help me find something I always say.....JUST BROWSING!!!!

UGH....I haven't worn heals for so long....it was after I blew out the ACL in my left knee playing racquettball against an A player on the challenge court.....who I beat on the last point...but got helped off the court so I couldn't defend my win......ended up with knee reconstruction 5 years later when they figured out what was wrong.....never again have I been able to wear heals.....I personally like my feet flat on the floor.

Live in fuzzy lined crocks in the winter & birkenstocks in the summer. They are actually designed with quite a lot of style & comfort is the only thing I care about

I live in loafers. Ballerina flats if I'm dressing up. I can't do heels at all. I have balance and mobility limitations, and I use a cane when walking. I have enough trouble stepping down off a curb, or negotiating uneven terrain, without adding the risk of heels to it.

In normal stores here people get a fixed salary. They couldn't care less what you buy.
