I think this has been done before, but since I had so much fun with this recently in real life...

let's see.

I am a Czech and I:

summertime stereotypes:
1) When I take vacation at the seaside I will swim in the sea even if it's cold outside or there are big waves. I've been saving my money the whole year for the sea, so I am gonna damn well enjoy it, even if I am the only person swimming.

2) I like beer. And last time I was abroad I found myself complaining "I don't like the beer in this country."

3) I DON'T!!! wear socks in sandals. I DON'T! wear my worst clothes when going on vacation ("nobody knows me here and i am not gonna damage my good clothes" goes the argument of my fellowcitizens). I DON'T use a plastic bag from a grocery store instead of purse or regular bag.

4) I convert the prices in my head and think everything is expensive.

other stereotypes
1) I am constantly in "so much hurry". I run on the escalators.

2) I talk politics mostly in angry manner.

3) I joke inapproprietelly. About everything. Cause nothing is funnier than wars and natural disasters. At the same time I follow several human rights org on my facebook and donate money and stuff when something happens somewhere.

4) I get very offended when mistaken for a Russian.

5) I like to talk to foreigners about our horrible, tragic history. I often explain this history is a reason why we drink so much.

6) I shop at the vietnamese markets a lot.

Principesa enjoys very much your writings, VenusHalley.

P.S. Very much do not fit stereotypes of my nationality.

I think it is hard to apply a stereotype to all Americans (at least from an American viewpoint; perhaps other countries stereotype all Americans the same, but that would be in error) because the stereotypes in this country tend to be regional/state-based.

Now, I live in North Texas (yes, Texas is large enough that various regions of the state have different stereotypes), so . . .

1. I don't have big hair (as apparently all Dallas women are supposed to have).

2. I've never ridden a horse and don't own a cowboy hat. (Now, drive 250 miles south and meet my cousins, and yes, they are very stereotypical cowboys).

3. I am not a fundamentalist conservative. I'm in the moderate to liberal range.

4. I don't drive a pick-up truck (although I wouldn't mind except for the gas mileage.)

5. I do have a Texan accent, although not as pronounced as my cousins (see #2) and not at all an East Texas accent (which is a whole other animal altogether).

6. I am actually rather cultured and am fortunate to live in a city with many cultural activities (not sure people would equate Dallas with culture if they didn't know the area, but it actually really is).

7. I do love a good steak and baked potato.

8. I could eat Mexican food daily I'm pretty sure.

9. I'm pretty friendly to strangers. They say Texans don't meet a stranger they don't like. We do tend to be pretty friendly folk for the most part.

Well, I'm American and the stereotypes I hear most often from my friends from other countries are:
-Americans are fat. I don't fit that one because I am a few pounds over being underweight.
-American's don't travel. I sort of fit this one. I've never yet traveled internationally because I can't afford it, but I do travel a lot within the United States.
-Americans know very little about the rest of the world. I don't fit this one because I have friends in many countries and I try to learn as much about their culture as I can. Also, I can name every country in the world and point to it on a map.
-Americans are obsessed with celebrities. I definitely don't fit this one. I don't even think I could name three celebrities, much less be obsessed with them.
-Americans are racist. I don't believe I am racist. I am very open to other cultures.

I have lived in 6 different states, but since I spent most of my childhood in Missouri and Texas, I consider myself to be what Americans refer to as G.R.I.T.S. ~ Girls Raised In The South. I used to have a very strong Texas accent, but worked hard to lose it after moving to California. Apparently, most Californians really hate Texas accents.

Some stereotypes of southern girls.
1. I can shoot just about any type of gun and yes I have a permit to carry concealed.
2. I consider white cream gravy to be a beverage.
3. I love chicken-fried steak.
4. I love to fish and I eat what I catch as long as it is big enough.(and I clean the fish myself)
5. I hate dresses.
6. I wear cowboy boots.
7. I can do 'donuts' in a pick up truck.
8. I go to rodeos.

Non-stereotype stuff
1. I'm a walking calculator.
2. I have a very high IQ.
3. I can write a complete sentence.
4. I prefer single malt scotch and I don't drink beer.
5. I can fix just about anything and do all my own home repairs - properly. I once put up crown molding in every room of my house. (me and my hubby)
6. I know who the father of my children is. (I know, really bad grammar)
7. I have never ridden a horse.
8. I have never had a pot-bellied pig as a pet.

I'm "crazy". More so when super pissed off. I'm tight with cash. I think that's it.

I'm a native Texan. From the stereotypes of Texans I've seen I may as well be from Mars. Or The Czech Republic I do have a pickup truck though

Big, big difference between Americans from one state to another. Am I a typical northern Californian? Yeah, pretty much. BUT my family came from Brooklyn and I've seen that going on in myself all of my life.

I grew up in the south (south east) and I think that's been covered quite well...I too, worked to lose my accent when I moved to Vegas, but that was because I hated being called 'cute'. I've been here 30 years.

Stereotypes I DON'T have:

1) I'm not a cocktail waitress, a bartender, a dealer, or a hooker.
2) I rarely talk about the heat...dry or otherwise
3) I rarely if ever go to casino's...not even the big, theme casinos
4) I don't gamble
5) I don't spend all day at the swimming pool lathered in 75 spf sunscreen, and then call a touch of pink a tan
6) I loathe tourists, although I recognize we need them. I still don't like them.
7) I don't speak spanish but I am fluent in accent.
8) I don't have a white car, and DON'T think it's cooler to do so. I mean really, 10 degrees cooler when the temp in the car is 125??? How could you tell????

Stereotypes I DO have:
1) I stay indoors in the summer and wear sweaters because the air conditioning is so freakin cold.
2) I like whiskey and margaritas.. although not simultaneously
3) Food...the spicier the better!
4) I luuvvvvv sports and although I don't gamble, people have bet and won based on my recommendations.
5) I've used a variation of 'what happens in vegas...' numerous times, but...I do bite the inside of my cheek as punishment when I have.

I'm sure there's more but that's all I could come up with at the moment. lol Good thread.

I'm from central Texas. Born and raised here in a very, very small town. It's a dying town now but I have fond memories of when I was small

Stereotypes I DO have:
1) I do have an accent
2) I have lived on a farm
3) I love horses, used to ride in my younger days
4) I do have a pickup truck(can't live without at least one)
5) Absolutely love the bluebonnets bloom.
6) I can't speak spanish, but wish I could.
Stereotypes I DO NOT have:
1) I hate beer
2) I don't own a cowboy hat or boots.(though have in the past)
3) I disagree with Texas politics.
4) I hate the heat in the summers and spend most of the summer under the A/C.
5) I don't hang out in bars.
6) Haven't been to a rodeo since I was in junior high.

The only two sterotypes of US citizens I can think of are

1) everyone is fat. Nope, most of my life I was underweight. Now I'm within the healthy range.

2) the "ugly" American who thinks everything should be done the way it is in the US. Nope again. I've done some traveling out of the country. What's the point i going somewhere else if you expect it to be the same as "at home?" I do NOT believe everything should be done the way it is here.

others pointed out that the US covers so many different areas and types of people. If we go by the sterotype of Floridians

1) I'm not a gun toting nut who believes in standing my ground.
2) I do not live in the Evergaldes surrounded by gators.
3) I do not visit the theme parks on a regular basis. Never been to most and can't remember the last time I went to one it's been so long.
4) I do not spend my days at the beach. I'm a working stiff. I get up and go to work every day.
5) Unlike most, I love the heat here. I am afterall a lizard!
6) There is no one "Florida accent". I can think of numerous different ones. For the most part I don't have any accent, but I can sound like pure Southern redneck when pissed off!
7) As of my last birthday I guess I now fit in the old fart sterotype in that I'm 60, but I've lived here since I was in my teens. I do NOT fit the sterotype of driving 20 miles below the limit, in the lefthand lane. If anything, I'm likely to be blowing them off the road! And, unlike the transplants who live here, I don't give a rat's backside how they did it "back home." If it was so danged great where you came from, go back!!!!
8) Like someone else mentioned, I hate the tourists, but understand we need them (and their money.)
9) I am most definitely NOT a conservative Rebuplican!

totally aside from the state I live in I live in the country. I guess I do fit many of those sterotypes.
-I drive a pick-up. It's hard to load a half ton of hay in the trunk of a car.
-Left to my own choice I would wear jeans, t-shirts, boots and a baseball cap.
- I listen to country music. Of course I also listen to classical, head banging rock and roll and tradtional Irish music!
- I don't own a gun. I'm not opposed to gun ownership by responsible others. They just aren't for me.
Thanks for this!

I totally love this!

When I was in England, I noticed # 2.....but in Wales, I didn't. #6 definitely, 'but wait, in an hour it'll change' lol.....
and of course, # 1 (but then again, I've learned to really love tea...no nasty aftertaste like with coffee).

Thought # 7 funny as hell, as I've seen that happen in the states as well, with tourists...
#5...yes, me too...but the British are pathological about it...my ex would actually RUN out of a store here if someone came at him with 'how are you? can I help you with something? like to see it in your size? I'm sure I can find it in your size' lmao

Excellent post....and of course, I loved #10 the most...perfection! lol

we have this in the foreign brand chain stores (god I love Claries, but please stop asking about my day. I am miserable and I am using cheap jewerly to temporarily numben the pain, thank you very much!).

The Vietnamese tend to do it, but they have their very own way, so I don't usually mind (unless they are trying to convince me that me and my slavic curves will fit into the same dress that the shop assistant who is 20 about sizes smaller than me is wearing...).

I don't fit the aforementioned American stereotypes, I prefer local politics to follow, as opposed to national. I have an accent, but it's not quite Massachusetts, more inland Maine, yes, there's a Maine difference. If all Massachusetts drivers are the worst in the world, explain my step nine, lowest insurance level and clean record. Defensive driving doesn't mean aggressive driving, it's about safety.
I AM NOT A LIBERAL. ..

Am educated, guess that fits the bill for stereotypes.

I live in northern Europe. In my country we are supposed to be

calm and controlled (that is me most of the times), I very rarely see anyone get angry in public

consensus oriented and for positive rights (yup yup!)

not really celebrating our national holiday (never do)

suggesting going out for coffee when making new friends (yup)

being blonde (well I was but as I aged my hair turned more medium brown)

owning a summer home (yep!)

rule bound and responsible (kind of)

comfortable in the woods (yup) and picking berries and mushrooms (sometimes)

drink enormous amounts of coffee (I prefer tea and I rarely drink coffee)

sit down for the holy coffee break every day (I don't work so no and I'm too random to do it by myself)

owning IKEA furniture (not really)

being quite quiet but loosen up and get really loud and annoying when drinking (no, I'm a little too loud normally and not a social drinker)

being a weekend binge drinker (disgusting! I can't imagine why people want to look ridiculous and then regret it every week)

eating a lot of mixed candy basically every day (don't eat candy)

being tall (me? you kidding?)

hating immigration (no)

Canadian here -

I'm very polite.
I apologize for almost everything, "Sorry" is kind of a social convention to be randomly inserted into every sentence.
I do say "Zed" instead of "Z"
I like beer - but don't drink anymore.
I hate being mistaken for an American, which happens to me a lot.
I love butter tarts and smarties.
I don't understand the fuss Americans make about abortion and gay marriage = in general I don't understand US politics.
I'm fanatical about preserving public health care.

Stereotypes I don't fit.
I don't say "Eh" at the end of every sentence.
I don't have a cottage or a canoe
I don't like hockey

But really we're sort of like the US in that we have all sorts of regional stereotypes on top of the national ones.
