I'm looking to learn some words that might typically be used on PC, but the German equivalent. Not necessarily something I can just Google, and God only knows what I'd find.
Since English is usually mandatory on these forums, I'm happy to move on to private messages, if you're OK with that. A native German-speaker or someone who is otherwise fluent (or just happens to know what I need to) is all fine by me. I speak a fair bit of German (don't see myself as at all fluent, yet, as I'm still missing a lot of nouns and my grammar isn't the best) so should be able to communicate in German, if that's easier. (via PM, of course) I just want to increase my knowledge in this area, because I may end up speaking to a German person who's struggling with stuff, or I might just want to talk about stuff of my own with 'em, and as it stands, I am a bit limited in what I can properly say without clutching at a bunch of weird words to try and explain myself. xD Incidentally, does anyone know how mental health is seen in Germany? I've never really asked, ... hell, I've never even talked about it to the various Germans with whom I've chatted. Is it taken seriously? Does the government help? Thanks in advance.

I love German too! Can't actually speak it but I need to learn a bit before I go there in March, I have some books I'm gonna work on. I guess I'm not what you're looking for, but good luck. I'm going to there to see and meet my favourite band, who are German
![]() There may be some youtube videos with German lessons, you could do a search, I think I will too. My dad did a few Spanish lessons on there so there must be German too.

Your post reminded me of an experience I had when I was in Junior College & a girl from church had returned from Peru with her Spanish speaking exchange family. I had taken 5 years if Spanish in school between high school & college so I thought it would be fun to speak in all Spanish to them...after all I remember at that time I was sitting in church & translating the sermon into Spanish in my mind.
I was trying to teach myself how to play the church organ for a sunday school performance that was planned & I was talking to them about having to use my feet to play the pedals on the organ......well, in spanish, there is the word "pata" & the word "pie" (P-A). I managed to use the word "pata" for my foot....but the word "pata" means animal paw or the leg of a table.....while "pie" is the human foot which was the word I really wanted to use but ended up using "pata". Needless to say....I got a lot of laughs from that as they pictured this dog paw playing the organ pedals. It definitely does help to have a good knowledge of the appropriate nouns so as NOT to embarrass one's self.....I'm sure it's the same with learning German....lol....I did that after 5 years of studying the language ![]()

Yep, those idioms are killers.......love the one in Spanish for "shut up"...."En Boca cerada no entra mosca"....translation, "In a closed mouth no flies will enter".....I'm sure there are more direct wordings....but that was the diplomatic way of saying it.
When you get technical regarding mental illness & other medical terms....that's a whole other world & it is necessary to know their dialogue way of talking about it or it could make for bad feelings (or worse). It sort of like when foreign people try to talk to us about technical things & don't know the terms in English....it can be entertaining...& confusing to figure out what they are talking about. I had to go to a new pain specialist this year & the Physician Assistant was from China.....I have migraines that never end.....She asked me a question using some term I can't remember now.....but it left me scratching my head trying to figure out what in the world she was asking me about. When I finally figured out what she was asking it left me smiling with a little chuckle thinking ah, that's how they say in in the Chinese language.

![]() That's great you already speak/write German, you're ahead of me already! Good luck finding the other words, and you're right not to give examples just in case, I'm not sure where you would find those, but if I do find out I'll let you know of course.
