Post your favourite lyric.

I'm listening to a track called Talk of This Town ... Aotearoa artist called Greg Johnson.

Quintessential singer-songwriter. Drunk, pubs, APRA silver scroll awards.

I would post this in social but ... more people read here.

there is a lovely track I'm listening to right now saying 'you stay out of your life, i'll stay out of mine'. about just being who you are at a certain time, not letting everything that's going on affect who you are ... be you.

Right i'll stop rambling ... but I'd love to hear some more defining lyrics ....

I'm really dating myself now We'll have to admit that it's good it's all right to be free ... but I've always "waited for" the Buffalo Springfield line in "For What It's Worth":

Nobody's right if everybody's wrong

It seems so obvious but often I forget to realize/think about it. There's often "another" way that hasn't been thought of yet and instead of arguing with each other, people could be looking for it.

I know some people might think this a sad song, but these are lyrics from one of my favourite songs. I always feel revitalized and reminded of the possibility of picking up the pieces and moving on when I hear this song.

From Atlantic City, Bruce Springsteen:

Well now, everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

The lyrics from Gillian Welch's Barroom Girls are a favourite of mine too. She just paints such a vivid, poignant picture with her words. I'm always moved by someone who can do such interesting things with language:

"Well the night came undone like a party dress
And fell at her feet in a beautiful mess."

I just love that!

There are just way too many, DSF. But here are a few off the top of my head.

The curtain rises on the scene
With someone shouting to be free
The play unfolds before my eyes
There stands the actor who is me

Moody Blues/The Actor

I've squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles,
such are promises.
All lies and jest,
Still a man hears what he wants to hear,
And disregards the rest

The Boxer/Simon and Garfunkel

There are people in your life who've come and gone.
They let you down, you know they hurt your pride.
Better put it all behind you, cause life goes on.
You keep carryin' that anger, it'll eat you up inside.

Don Henley/End Of The Innocence

Petunia, reading your post just reminded me of how much I love The Boxer. Makes me want to dig out all my old S&G cassettes.

Petunia I have friends in a band who cover The Boxer, not as well as the original obviously, but it still gives me shivers when I hear it live.

Album: 8 Mile Soundtrack (2002)
Artist: Eminem
Song: 8 Mile

I'm a man, Ima make a new plan
time for me to just stand up, and travel new land
time for me to just take matters in to my own hands
once on move on from these track, I'll never look back (8 Mile Road)
and I'm gone, and I know right where I'm going
sorry mama I'm grown I must travel alone
ain't gonna follow no footsteps, I'm making my own
only way I know how to escape from this 8 Mile Road

Walking these train tracks, trying to regain back
the spirit I had 'fore I go back to the same crap
to the same plant, in the same pants
trying to chase rap, gotta move A-SAP
get a new plan, mamas got a new man
poor little baby sister, she don't understand
sits in front of the TV, buries her nose in the pad
and just colors till the crayon gets dull in her hand
while she colors her big brother and mother and dad
ain't no telling what really goes on in her little head
wish I could be the daddy that niether one of us had
but I keep running from something I never wanted so bad
sometimes I get upset, cause I ain't blew up yet
it's like I grew but I ain't grown these two nuts yet
don't gotta rep my step, don't got enough pep
the pressures too much man Im just trying to do what's best
and I try, sit alone and cry, yo I'm on telling god
not a moment goes by, that I don't prey to the sky
please I'm beggin you god, please don't let me be pigeon holding no regular job
yo I hope you can hear me homey, wherever you are
yo I'm telling you dawg, I bailing this trailor tomarrow
tell my mother I love her and kiss baby sister goodbye
say "whenever you need me baby I'm never 2 far"
but yo I got to get out there, the only way I know
And I'ma be back for you the second that I blow
on everything I own I'll make it on my own
off to work I go, back to this 8 Mile Road

(Chorus)

You got to live it to feel it, you didn't you wouldn't get it
don't see what the big deal is...

I get gushy about lyrics :>

Hunters and Collectors Throw Your Arms Around Me is one that gives me chills every time. Pearl Jam covered this as the opening song at their very first NZ show ever .... REEEOOOW!

I will come to you in the daytime
I will raise you from your sleep
I will kiss you in four places
As I go runnin' down your street

I will squeeze the life right out of you
I will make you laugh, and make you cry
And we may never forget it
As I make you call my name as you shout it to the blue, summer sky

And we may never meet again
So shed your skin lets get started
And you will throw your arms around me
And you will throw your arms around me

I will come to you at nightime
I will climb into your bed
I will kiss you in 195 places
As I go swim around in your head

I will squeeze the life right out of you
I will make you laugh, I'll make you cry
And we may never forget it
As I make you call my name as you shout it to the blue, summer sky

And we may never meet again
So shed your skin lets get started
And you will throw your arms around me
And you will throw your arms around me

I saw Simon and Garfunkel at the Reunion Tour in 2003. I have seen a lot of big names in concert before but this one left me speechless. To hear them sing The Boxer, Sound of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Water, well, let's just say the old flower got a little teary eyed. We'll have to admit that it's good it's all right to be free ...

There are days when I swear I could fly like an eagle
And dark desperate hours that nobody sees

My arms stretched triumphant on top of the mountain
My head in my hands... down on my knees

Stevie Nicks/Sometimes It's A *****

So I try to say
Goodbye my friend

I'd like to leave you with something warm

But never have I been a blue calm sea
I have always been a storm

Fleetwood Mac/Storms

Rulers make bad lovers
You better put your kingdom up for sale

Stevie Nicks/Goldust Woman

"Heal Over" KT Tunstall

It isn't very difficult to see why
You are the way you are
Doesn't take a genius to realize
That sometimes life is hard
It's gonna take time
But you'll just have to wait
You're gonna be fine
But in the meantime

Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
Come a little nearer baby
Coz you'll heal over
Heal over
Heal over someday

And I don't wanna hear you tell yourself
That these feelings are in the past
You know it doesn't mean they're off the shelf
Because pain's built to last
Everybody sails alone
But we can travel side by side
Even if you fail
You know that no one really minds
Come over here lady

Don't hold on but don't let go
I know it's so hard
You've got to try to trust yourself
I know it's so hard, so hard

Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
Come a little nearer baby
Coz you'll heal over, heal over, heal over someday
