Ok this one is dumb but I really wondered about it this morning. I was driving my son to work this morning and I asked him "how r u son?" And "how did u sleep?" He said "I slept well but my alarm went off late." I thought to myself, "my alarm went off late." "OFF?" Did his alarm not go ON when he wanted it to go off? So I asked him about it. He quickly said, yeah dad like when u say the bomb is about to go off, u wouldn't say "the bomb is about to go on." Ok, yes I know what it means to "go off" but why isn't it "the alarm didn't go on"

To go off in this sense is related to the expression to set off, meaning to start or to be started. It implies that the subject was in a state of rest, then moved off from that state into action. The phrasal verb to go on already has the meaning of to continue.
And here ends Professor Blitters lesson. See you all again same time next week.

Maybe I have the wrong perspective. When the light goes off the light turns off. Off is off in that case. Maybe if I look at the alarm going off as the timer running down and therefore running and when it clicks to the off position of the timer it went "off" and the alarm sounds. Maybe that was it.

But you can take off to turn the light off....
Don't you love the precision of definition the Engish language has?

I wonder when I will consider quitting the computer/limit my use, and start building my own library. I am not even a reading person but i always wanted to do that. Also I know I can read anything and everything online, but the fact that getting the information/knowledge online is easy makes it so boring and meaningless., and perhaps you will forget it quickly because what comes easy goes easy lol. I know I exaggerate.

Hi 1234magnolia. You might want to read "The Structure of Awareness by Thomas Oden
He talks about how we are always stuck in the present and think back on past things that creates a depressed mood because we cannot go back in time to fix it and anxiety because we cannot go the future and makes things come out the way we want them. We are stuck with the here and now and have control over our present. It was an interesting book IMO. Last edited by Anonymous37848; Aug 27, 2015 at 01:33 PM. |

Same here IrisBloom. You know it's not that I am ungrateful for the technology we have. The thing is, I just don't like that without my computer I would be/feel completely empty, especially I have no friends etc.. If I got rid of my computer today, I wouldn't find joy in anything else, I wouldn't be able to make a journey or go to the cinema since I am lonely. So I always find myself forced to spend most of my time online. I don't know why I always imagined/liked the idea of having my own library that I built it over the years. I'd love looking at it and feel proud that it is now full of actual books that I enjoyed reading. LoL I know it's pathetic, but as I said everything entertaining needs company to enjoy it. I don't think I can even enjoy nature by myself. |

I understand what you are talking about when you say without computer/technology we would be/feel empty.
As a side note, I think it would be really cool to build your own library. I often like going there for the peace and solitude and the smell of aging paper. I agree that with information so easily accessible, I find myself postponing reading something. Definitely want to get back into reading more. Thanks for this wonder.

Trembling, it would be very cool to have your own library. I also would be lost without my computer. It was down for 4 days recently and I was very sad. (But I did read a book)
![]() To me it's thrilling to know I have the world's knowledge at my fingertips. But if you are trying to decide whether paper books or electronic info is superior, I see no need to choose. They are both wonderful inventions! ![]()

Hahahaha lavedersage,
We have mosquitoes.so they can eat me up as they usually do. They chomp me up. They fly around and zero in on me. I like to say, "It's because they think I'm HOT!" We have frogs because..... ok,"how are a frog and a bicycle alike? They are alike because they both have handlebars except for the frog." (Ok I know that is the lames riddle of all time but I LOVE telling it). Pigeons so they know what it is like for a rat to fly is like and rats are good for research. Those are only my opinion but there u have them. ![]() frogs, rats, pigeons and |

My son has 3 skeleton keys. He was wonder as time passes if the keys we us now will be similar to the skeleton keys of old and not be used. That is a fair wondering. Think. I have seen some newer keys that have the sides with cut grooves. I need to go tell him about those. If it keeps going like that then out regular keys will be obsolete like the skeleton keys.

I wonder if all those cops will agree or disagree with my assessment, that my street doesn't seem like a very good candidate for drag racing?
I'd stated that I didn't truly feel it was ideal for drag racing, on the local forum, when I defended it, in descriptive details as to why I doubted a particular statement. Tonight had several of them, close to a dozen, fly up it, tonight. I'm wondering about why. They read and participate there, too. |
