I taught myself how to crochet about 8 months ago and love doing it. My friend taught me granny squares, but I didn't really do too much with them. I'm now making a granny square blanket for a friend who's pregnant, different pastel colors that I'll join. Anyway, starting them was always such a pain in the butt and they were coming out all lopsided.

Today I found this awesome website that shows you how to start a granny square and there's video.....its amazing how easy it is. (As long as you can chain and do double crochet stitches, you'll be able to do it).

I'm sure there are others here who like to crochet, so I wanted to share the site.

Crochet is fun. I've done all kinds of things. Afghans and bunny buddy blanket (this is one of my favs - only did it once so far), doillies, scarfs, and booties. No sweaters though.

Hi Raynaadi,

I know the lopsided granny square all too well. Thanks a ton for the Granny Square 101 site! I never even thought to look on the web. I’ve been trying to go off of pictures in a book. Knitting, crocheting, and weaving have all become healthy outlets for me.

Crochet!!Again, thanks! ~ Bee

Thanks for sharing the Granny Square link...I too stay away from that one because I don't know how to do it correctly, though I've made them in the past. I love to crochet and make oodles of shawls and berets.

Winter! LOL!
I taught myself to crochet after my left-handed mother tried to teach me as a young girl.! I make it up mostly, and don't use patterns. Go for it!

I don't work from patterns either. They're just too hard to follow for me. Here's 2 pics of the first blanket I ever did. Its just a giant granny square, see how lopsided it is? LOL! I gave it to my 3 year old nephew. Apparently he won't sleep without it!

Thanks Patty! I'm so glad I got pics of it. I was kinda sad to give it away lol. I've got a pink and silver one started that I'm making for myself, but I'm taking a break from it to make a baby blanket for my friend who's pregnant with her first baby. They're not finding out what they're having, but they're doing the nursery in Winnie the Pooh, so I'm doing a bunch of pastel Winnie the Pooh colored squares to join together. Its been an undertaking....they were all coming out lopsided and then I found that link.....so I'm hoping to have enough yarn to do all good squares, don't know what I'll do with the lopsided onces lol!!!

Ray...I find crochet to be a great relaxation...something I can do while watching tv or movies, and having a meditative quality.

Me too. I learned it to do in meetings. I'd see women crocheting or knitting during the meeting and so I tried it, and it helps me pay attention to what people are saying because I'm not looking around and letting my mind wander.

Haven't crocheted in years but use to make cotton bath rugs by the dozens. Rugs were a hexagon shape and made from cotton rug yarn.

You could make a big or small as you wanted. Small ones would work well (I think they called them hot pads) under hot pots on the dining room table.

Great way to pass the time when you needed a little quiet time.

I don't ever remember them slipping. I guess they could though cause there is no backing.

I haven't crocheted in a long time. My mother taught me how when I was about 9. I crocheted a lot of things in highschool. a purse, a rug, afghans, a vest etc. I amke a few baby afghans. The thing I like about crocheting is that you can actually sculpt with it and make different forms by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches added to a row.
Have fun!

I've got 3 projects going lol. Since I learned the better way to make granny squares, I've restarted the baby blanket I was making, and then I dug out one that I had started for myself with pink and silver yarn. I had made a granny square out of it that was 20 rows on each side. Now I'm making small squares with pink and silver that are 4 rows on the sides, so 5 on each side of the big one. I'll line that one with all the squares, and then crochet all around it, and then make more squares. I think it'll turn out so cool. I make all the patterns myself, creating is fun! I'm also working on a scarf from some scrap yarn. I'm leaving Sunday for a week in Sedona and I plan to crochet a TON while I'm there!
