I went to get an eye exam yesterday to get contacts, and from the script the doctor gave, apparently my astigmatism is going away as it went from -0.75 in both eyes to -0.25 in one and -0.50 in the other. And the power went down too...from -1.0 and -.75 to -0.50 and -0.75.

That didn't seem right, so today I went and got a second opinion elsewhere, and the script is different, stronger, and better. I can see much better with the new one than the first one (and stronger than my old script as well).

I'm still gonna keep my followup appt with the first place and kind of run a "competition" between the lenses over the next week, but I'm trying to figure out what the best way of doing that is. Switch them every other day? Change them mid day? Any ideas? Question simplified: How can I test both of these lenses out over the next week doing it fairly?

The lenses aren't just different powers, they're also different brands. Script #1 is Acuvue Oasys and script #2 is Biofinity. It's hard to say right now which I like better since I've only worn them each one day and it's been ages since I last wore contacts so of course I could feel them in my eyes...but I do want to get this sorted!

I used to wear Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism, but now my astigmatism went down and it's too low for that which is why I have the regular Acuvue Oasys.

As for your concerns, let me shed some light: 1) I went to two different places and therefore two different doctors which is why I got different brands of lenses. 2) As for the different Rx, the first place I went to is probably wrong. I went out of convenience and pricing, but I've had a really bad time with this place before -- so bad that I ended up talking with the district manager and getting the doctor who did my exam fired...so I'm thinking they hire shoddy doctors. 3) The scripts aren't majorly off, but the second is higher than the first, and higher than my old one which makes sense.

Also, what about my actual question??

Personally, I'd probably do one week with one, and then another week with the other.

As RS suggests, I would wear one for one week and the other for another week as this would be the only way to tell comfort with vision how it is and to tell the difference between the two. I would move my follow-up visit out so you can fully test them to see which script is right and which lense fits you best. If you need more time to decide... move the appointment, which is easily done.

Hmm...maybe I'll modify it from a week each to 2 days each and then I can get a feel for them and still keep my original appointment.

Usually one is born with astigmatism. It shouldn't change like that unless you have some kind of eye disease or injury. Are you sure you are reading your prescription correctly? The astigmatism portion on the prescription is cylinder and axis.

I'm positive. And it was the doctor who said what it was, not even me reading anything. Also, according to the second doctor, astigmatism can in fact change.

At my last appointment I was told I no longer have astigmatism. Weird, huh?

Thanks for letting me know. The person who told me it doesn't obviously had no idea what they were talking about.

I've decided to go with the second doctor/prescription/set of lenses. After testing them both out for a full day, the choice is clear.

I'm very nearsighted (and now I have the mid-life eye stuff going on, too...presbyopia). I wore contact lenses for well over thirty years until I switched entirely to glasses. I always found that I could tell whether a prescription was correct within half an hour of putting the lenses in.

The second prescription is definitely better! The first isn't strong enough. Does it help? Yes...but my vision is still blurry, especially at the computer.

With the second, it's like I have HD vision! I feel like I might be able to wear a script that was a tad weaker and still see sharply, but I don't think this one is too strong -- it's like I'm right on the cusp.

I ordered a supply of the second script, and I'm very happy with it. The lenses are very comfortable (much more comfortable than the others) and yesterday I wore them for about 6 hours before deciding to take them off...and since I'm only a week into wearing contacts, I'm happy with 6 hours since I could've gone longer, but I want to get my eyes used to it and not do too much too soon.

I tried both brands. I can't speak to your success, but I found the Biofinity are more comfortable. I can wear them all day and my eyes are not bloodshot by the afternoon.

P.S. There is a rebate on the Biofinity website if it applies to your Rx...

I agree that the Biofinity are more comfortable. That's what I ordered. I got them super cheap ($16.99/box), so I don't think a rebate would even be worth it...but then, I rarely think rebates are unless they're instant.

What solution do you use with the Biofinity lenses? I'm trying to find the best one.

Oh sorry. I didn't see this. I use Opti-Fresh instant. But I have used several brands, they all seem the same to me.

I guess mine were more expensive, I would have to check. I know I got fifty dollars back and that's fine by me!

The fact that you state that you can see MUCH better with the new one than the first one.....would be MY DEFINING test right there. That seeing much better has to do with the script, not the type of contact lens you are using.

Glasses or contacts are about seeing much better......testing isn't going to change that. Maybe the comfort of the different brands, but your seeing better with the second prescription tell is all as to which one was correct.

I used OptiFree PureMoist the other night and it worked great! I used it again last night, and I don't know if it's just because I put my contacts in with already tired eyes since it was so early, but the comfort didn't last as long.

No worries I checked it out, and it's no good for online purchases. So it's moot anyway lol

I wasn't really asking about testing the prescriptions, it was more about the contacts themselves because if the Acuvue were more comfortable I would ask the second doctor to try those over the Biofinity. Does that make sense?

I guess it really doesn't make sense because how can you truly wear them to test them if you can't see well with them? There will be so many other difficulties that not seeing well can cause even like headaches......& how can you tell whether it's the bad prescription or the lenses that aren't fitting well & causing problems......that was where I was coming from. One may not be able to tell whether it's the wrong prescription or the difference in contact lens that is causing the discomfort unless there is a specific discomfort from the lens & that you will know almost immediately & not have to give it days.

Because even a lower Rx is better than no Rx. I could see better with the contacts from the first doctor than without any, but the second was better in sight and comfort.

Even when I had to go back to an older pair of glasses with less of an RX than the ones that broke & that much more less than the new Rx I needed, it gave me headaches.......Just because an rx is better than none doesn't mean that it won't have a negative effect if it's less than what is needed. That's why it's so important for them to get the Rx RIGHT!!!!

The lower Rx didn't give me headaches or anything, just not crystal clear vision. With the second, higher Rx, it feels like I'm seeing in HD.

Glad it didn't give you headaches as some times eyes that are straining more difficult to see headaches are possible.....glad you didn't have that experience.

Love that HD seeing experience after everything being so foggy. LOL...sometimes my glasses are dirty, & I can't figure out why everything is so hazy & unclear.....then I clean my glasses & that HD feeling comes.
