I hear this all the effing time from my mother. She went to school in a time where yes, having a degree basically did guarantee you a job, especially if you majored in something in STEM.

I try to explain to her that there's currently a 7.5% unemployment rate among college grads, compared to around 5% several years ago and she literally just screamed WROOOOOOONG! at me. Since I got the information off the internet, it's automatically a lie, while her experiences from 30 years ago are true forever.

This makes it virtually impossible to discuss anything with her, since all the up-to-date information she never looks at is online.
My parents are like that was well.......they came of age in the 50s when everything was sunshine and lollipops. My mom has no concept of what it is like to work and raise a family in the 21st century and questions every decision made by me and my siblings. Today's speed of life has no meaning to them.

"Pfft...you don't need counseling." -- complete stranger who overheard me telling my friend that I was overwhelmed with grief over my first husband's death and had decided to see a grief counselor. Jerk.

My mom started working in the 80s and definitely is disconnected. In her day, college seniors had friendly competiton to see who was offered more for their out-of-college job; it was easy to live alone, without roommates, on a starting salary. The fact that living alone is a luxury today and and college grads rarely have jobs waiting for them, is lost on her.

**** this person. Seriously. You don't know how bad grief can be unless you've seen it or experienced it. That person is an ***.

Don't worry, it will grow out.

"Make sure you take your meds. "

I do take them but I resent people lecturing me on this. Besides, am I exhibiting questionable behavior?
Thanks for this!

"Do you ever just try being happy?"

I want to grab them by the hand, lean close and lick their knuckles. Whispering, "This makes me happy."

Worst advice given to me? Various, cheap and overused platitudes. The sentiment behind them is nice, don't get me wrong, but you can do so much better than "It'll happen when it happens".

I have said "be well" when I was younger. To me it's just a nicer way to say "so long". I never meant it as a left-handed remark, or anything like that.

I have a similar one. "You tend to victimize yourself and act like 'woe is me'" "you're always making it about you, how you feel, about your thoughts, how something affects you but don't forget that there's another side to it, others get affected by it just like you"

This was coming from someone who I called my best friend. I confixed in her and when she said this I felt so crappy almost guilty that I was depressed.
Thanks for this!

That "you're always making it about you" makes me blood boil. That's awful!
