Hi everyone,
I thought I'd start a different kind of thread so we could share the things that really push our buttons.

Here's my first one:
Be well.
Somebody said that to me today who I think may be a drug addict, who's living with someone who is rumored to be and looks like a drug addict, and she's telling me be well? I know she meant it in a friendly way, but it was said after I told her I couldn't stay for a social event because I had work to do.

It especially irks me when somebody else with a MI who has been very clear how they feel about me tells me "be well". To me that's a polite way of verbally flipping me off, and I'd rather say what they're really mean.

Next? I've got more too.

My father, when I was 5. I have a cleft palate and hair lip. Hardly noticeable, no,speech impediment. But I have 4 degrees and never married or had children.

The reason I was denied SSDI the first time. I hired an attorney who said she would like to know where a low-stress job was because she didn't know of any.

Worst for me was... You take things too serious, you should go with the flow, loosen up, life isn't that serious.

All of these really take me back, unfortunately.
The one about positivity set me back mentally for several years, trying fruitlessly to do just that.
The one about salvation being some sort of cure all really makes me mad, as a Christian. How many people have lost their way because of lies like that?

So many simple minded people who think life advice can be drilled down to just a few simple words. Over simplifying our struggle so they don't have to feel bad or think twice about what they've chosen to believe in.

I'm sorry you guys have had to be on the receiving end of ******** like this. I don't think we can even call it advice. I think of it more like 'self-serving lies I tell other people so I don't have to feel bad'. Really. That's how I think of it.

Yeah and some people think therapy is to learn principles you weren't taught as children. Right, as if the right principles could prevent mental illness. Sure. You just need the right upbringing and you'll be mentally fit as a fiddle. And all those people who are mentally ill? Well, they just weren't raised right!
