We just had a new floor installed in our house. When the installation crew came they had to move our wooden entertainment unit in order to start putting the floor down. Our old carpet was still there. When they moved the unit, the top shelving piece slid off and fell to the ground. The backed popped off of it and the crew spent about 25 minutes or so drilling the piece back together. They were apologetic and said that if we still didn't feel like it looked right, then call their store and they would replace it. When sitting in our room and looking at the unit, it looks the same as it did before. It still functions the same way and appears fine. The only thing is when you stick your head into the unit itself and look up at the underside of it, there are about 4 half-dollar size spots where the veneer is ripped off and the particle board is gouged out. Cosmetic damage mainly. Again, it's not visible from the room. Only visible if you stick your head in and look under it, which most people never do anyway. I should add this is a 10 year old piece that has a few scratches and dents in it already from wear and tear over the years. And it is not a family heirloom or anything. Would you all make a claim with the store for this or not? I'd rather not deal with the hassle of this if it's not worth it.

I doubt it will be worth your time, frankly. A ten year old piece made of particle board and veneer wouldn't be worth my time and trouble, but that's just me.
Thanks for this!

No, I wouldn't.

I have a bookcase with doors that we used for our stereo systems years ago that we drilled holes in like yours has. It's not noticeable.

I wouldn't bother. It's time consuming and the guys felt really bad about it.

I have mixed feelings. I would give the company a call and invite someone out to have a look. It wouldn't hurt right?
Thanks for this!

I wouldn't bother either. It sounds like it looks fine, unless you specifically do something that you'd normally never do? And it's working fine? Yeah, I wouldn't bother personally - because I don't like dealing with that kind of hassle either, and *for me* it would fall into the "good enough" category.

And... how do you like the new floors?! Other than the broken entertainment unit, how much of a hassle was it getting them put in? At some point, I'd like to get new floors... but I have no clue what's involved. It seems a little overwhelming!

How and with whom would you file the claim?

Maybe don't stick your head in and look under it.

Thanks so much everyone for your replies!! I decided not to file a claim. Interesting thing is that the guys were finishing up my floor on the day after they dropped the piece to my entertainment unit. They noticed the trim piece that was supposed to go around my fireplace was a different color than the rest of the wood floor. It was lighter and redder in color. The man working on it stopped and said, "that does not look right. We have to change that." he called their store and had someone drive out to our house special with a new piece of trim that matched the floor and installed it. he wanted to make sure it looked good. Personally, I think he appreciated that I did not call the store and complain about them dropping the piece from my entertainment unit. Because I was fair with them, they were fair and worked extra hard for me. Because he could have just slapped the trim piece he had with him on there and called it a day. And guilloche......we LOVE the floors. It was 4 days of being inconvenienced and having loud saws going all the time, but it was worth it. They just moved the furniture around as they went from room to room. Glad we did it......and also glad it's over. HA!
Thanks for this!

Aww, that was nice of them to get the last little piece just right! Glad you're loving them... I bet that 4 days felt like forever !
