Up here in the Northwoods, we're in the middle of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. (The "regular" state fair is in Milwaukee in August.) As the new kid in town, guess who gets to cover this august occasion? fun fair food

This being America's Dairyland (at least according to our license plates), various forms of cheese are abundant, including "cheese on a stick" (couldn't make it up if I tried) and hot, fresh, beer-battered cheese curds fun fair food. But on my second trip out there today, I saw something I have never seen before: A pork chop on a stick. I'm not kidding. The vendor's proximity to the 4-H cattle barns was a little too much for me, LOL.

I'm curious about weird fair food in other states. What's the strangest thing you've ever seen at your state fair or community festival, whether you would actually consider eating it or not? fun fair food

Garlic cheese curds?! I WANT. Sound tasty. Mmmm.

I haven't ever really seen anything weird at fairs. I haven't gone to many though. I have tried deep-fried icecream though and deemed it to be not at all my 'thing'.

What in the world is "hot, fresh, beer-battered cheese curds"? I've never heard of it.

OMG...garlic cheese curds...sounds fantastic...I want some!
I used to do the art/craft fairs here in WV for several years, and the food vendors really are the most successful vendors of the fairs! One vendor shared with me that he had made $10,000 selling just funnel cakes over a three day period...Of course, that means standing over hot boiling fat in intense heat and adverse conditioins, but much more successful than any artist at the show!
I recall that the Ohio State Fair was big on selling corn on the cob roasted in the leaves. Great buttered!

Oh, you don't know what you're missing, Jan!

And no, I believe it's probably impossible to fry cottage cheese :-)

cheese curds

Fried cheese curds
Deep-fried

In Minnesota, Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and Iowa, deep-fried cheese curds are often found at carnivals and fairs, and occasionally local non-chain fast food restaurants and bars. Deep-fried cheese curds are covered with a beer-based batter, like that used for onion rings, or are breaded and placed in a deep fryer creating something akin to mozzarella sticks.

In the United States, A&W Restaurants and Culver's have added fried cheese curds to their menu and they are available nationwide.

Festival season continues apace, and to my list of never-before-seen food on a stick I can now add cheesecake, brownies, and shrimp. I suppose shrimp skewers aren't that uncommon in grilling season (although up here in the heart of deer-hunting country not too many folks eat seafood), but cheesecake and brownies?? fun fair food fun fair food

Tomorrow I am going to the MN state fair with a friend. I am bringing this back up because I wanted everybody to have the same laugh I got at looking at the list of food on a stick!

I myself am going to have to try the -- I kid you not, it's on the list -- FRIED FRUIT. Taking something "good for you" and turning it into a dietary abomination? Right up my alley. fun fair food fun fair food fun fair food fun fair food fun fair food

Check this out!

There is something vaguely disturbing about the number of foods available on sticks.

I guess sticks are just a convenient way to both serve and eat off at a fair ...?

Btw fried cheese is not unusual - the Greeks have always done with with Halloumi for example (actually it's Cypriot).

It is great grilled in olive oil and tossed through a green salad perhaps with some chicken and olives ...

I was with squeamish people so I didn't try the alligator, and they were out of the ostrich-on-a-stick when we got there. We pretty much stuck to boring stuff, which was a drag. Maybe next year. fun fair food I did get pictures of a number of bizarre things on a stick! LOL
