I'm getting into the exercise thing but I'm not quite sure of where or how to start.

What is your exercise routine? Any tips for faster weight loss and increasing metabolism?

As I've no car, I walk everywhere up to 45-50min one way fairly frequently. Come warmer months this increases to a minimum 60min BRISK walking per day. I am on Metformin to control my weight and metabolism (at one point I was gaining it rapidly). I have lost what I have gained (20lbs) and am slowly continuing to shrink (4 clothing sizes in last 2 months).

I don't have a car either so walking is normal to me.

I also run, bike, swim and recently took up the gym. I find the gym boring though, I prefer the outdoors.

Completely agree with finding something you enjoy - also I find music motivates me running and the gym. Friends (or groups) are good motivation too.

As for faster weight loss, I think it's a balance of high and low intensity, look into HIIT there's a lot of research on that (not done it myself).

There's an exercise forum here too.

Just get moving. Get out the house and start walking. Find reasons and places to walk to every day. Depending on your finances buy a piece of exercise equipment so you can exercise at home during bad weather. I love my cross trainer which I bought at a charity shop.

My exercise options are limited with my leg that won't move but I do an hour of PT a day (6 days week) and I work my upper body.

Best thing to do is to start with small regular exercise and work up from there. I've jumped into trying to be more active than my body was ready for before and you just feel rough if you do that which puts you off doing it again. Try and find something you enjoy or some other motivating factor like music or through other people - eg classes or being active with family or friends.

If your starting goal is weight loss then the number one thing to do is to look at diet and then some kind of regular cardio exercise. The healthcare service here says that adults should aim to do 2 and a half hours of cardio a week. Also, especially in terms of metabolism, you want to eat less than you need but not by a drastic amount as your metabolism can slow as a response which doesn't help you out. Keep in mind how your body will get energy as you exercise - the more demanding the exercise the more your body needs energy quickly so will break down more carbohydrates which are faster to breakdown than fats which are slower. More fat is burned at a slower pace.

Strength based exercise that is aimed at muscle building will burn calories too and by increasing muscle you increase metabolism (although it is a small amount).

I personally started off doing an hour of cardio a week which was a dance-based fitness class. I then did another couple of hours of dance fitness at home a week and started to do strength based exercises too - probably a couple of hours a week. I have an active job so have to eat a lot to make up for it all but I naturally have quite a high metabolism.

Try and get a balance between endurance, strength, aerobic and I would say, spiritual. So on days i don't use the crosstrainer I walk to the sports centre(5mile round trip) , do a class (yoga, tai chi, Pilates, aerobics), go in the gym, finish with a swim in the pool. Walk home and carry back shopping on the way. Cut down carbs and sugar. My daily 'must haves' ?broccoli, garlic, turmeric, linseed, onion, red pepper, carrot, kale, spinach plus protein.

Not anymore. I used to do rope-jumping, which is quite nice because you can do it at home, assuming that your neighbors won't hear you jumping ^^
Also I have read somewhere that you can burn more calories than with running, but I don't know if that's true. My reason for starting rope-jumping was to decrease my blood pressure. Got lazy and now I have stopped.

I stretch extensively and have incorporated resistance aspects to many of them. Great for posture overall and certain back problems too. I bicycle a fair amount as well, having had to give up motor vehicles a couple of yrs ago due to financial restraint.

Excellent.

>What is your exercise routine?

I do a Push Pull Shoulders Legs routine 4 days on 1 day off. I also do cardio for 1hr a day every day and make use of the sauna 5 days a week for 20 minute sessions each.

>Any tips for faster weight loss and increasing metabolism?

Barring any physiological issues, it's just a matter of calories in and calories out.

Just enter "calorie calculator" in google and you should be shown a link that has the calculator where you enter your age/height/weight/exericse.

As far as exercise goes just be consistent with whatever you enjoy doing. If it's running, cycling, weight lifting, or whatever you need to adhere to a specific regimen in order to get your body functioning at a particular rate to change your metabolism. Check out Starting Strength or a PPL routine if you like lifting.

With diet it helps if you meal plan and cook your meals for the week so you don't have an excuse to eat when you're out somewhere. I'm a fan of eating 5-6 meals a day... check out meal prep websites.
